KAWASAKI Z200 1980 ISSUES..

I purchased a 1980 Z200 last year.. It was claen & ran nice when I had it delivered all the way from sunny Aberdeenshire!! the bike has not been on the road for at least 10 year.. In fact I think he said it was 1994!! Anyhow I got a brand new battery as It was totally shot & tidied her up, got a original exhaust for her of which I had to buy another Z200 just to get the exhaust.. Any how the bike strikes up & runs sweet as a nut.. so quite with no rattles whatsover!! The engine is so dry its unreal.. one big problem is... It strikes up totally fine from cold with choke.. after about 3 or 4 minutes & the choke has been knocked off.. the bike stops ticking over properly & if you touch the throttle she starts to missfire slightly & splutter!! Also at this point the engine appears to be too hot for my liking.. Seems to warm up a little too fast!! This worries my a little.. My main suspictions are that the points need replacing.. I do not have the extractor tool to do this... Obviously I strongly suspect the carburation too.. I have set the screws on the carb once she`s warm but to no avail.. I`m not really one for taking things to bits as I get really frustrated if something goes wrong & am likely to pick up the bike & throw it 10 feet!!! lol just me with a bad temper!! won`t change now as been like it since I was a youngster... lol anyway back to the Z.. i had a 6 month old one of these in 1981.. God dam I wish I still had it now.. she was mint with 1 & half k on the clock.. I would love to put this one on the road though.. maybe for next spring.. Anyone in Lincolnshire on here got a workshop!!?? Would love to hear any suggestions though regarding this problem.. The bike has 17k on the clock of which I would say is 100% genuine.. Erratic idle and hot running can indicate an air leak past the inlet manifold. Given the rubbers will be 30 years old, this is a distinct possability.

Test for this by spraying EZ start or WD40 over the inlet rubber with the bike idling. If the revs increse, you have a leak.

Timing too far advanced could also cause the problem you describe. Could be set wrong or could be that the mechanical advance mechanism is stuck on advanced (broken spring, stuck weight etc).

Checking the condition of the sparkplug electrode will give you a clue, if it's white, scorched or pitted suspect trouble with runnjing lean or too far advanced.

You may well find that the thread on the rear wheel spindle will act as a flywheel puller, I can't confirm this but it does on other kawasakis.

I'd check the plug first, then check for an air leak, then inspect and set the timing.

Ok many thanks for that.. I did check the plug of which is a new one & its burning very dry & very white in colour.. I will try the other options you suggested.. many thanks for your reply & advice..[/i][/b]
