I acquired A Honda CD200 Benly TA (6 Volt), a while back, a non-runner and I'm using it as a 'first project' bike. I have limited mechanical knowledge and I'm learning through my many mistakes. I'm making steady progress (although haven't had it running yet!).

My next job is to take the engine apart, and check the pistons barrells etc due to there being no compression.

I have access to another engine that came out of a 1982 TB Benly (12volt) Bike which I know runs fine. Could I just put the 12 Volt engine into my 6 volt bike?

No.....well you could so long as you swap the entire electrical system at the same time (wiring, coils, lights, indicators and control switches and anything else that runs of 6v)!

Thanks for that, maybe someone could offer advice before I attack the engine!

When I received the bike it had been stood/garaged for 20 years, It's fairly tidy apart from exhaust/mudguards etc which have a bit of rust, but nothing major. I've changed oil/petrol replaced plugs/leads/coil/points/battery and electrics seem to be working ok now. Lack of spark problem sorted last week, turned out to be points.

When I first got the bike it wouldn't turn over, Kickstart lever stuck solid. A mate told me to take out the plugs and put a tiny bit of oil down holes and try again in the morning which worked a treat and now the engine turns over when kicked.

Still not firing up though, My limited mechanical knowledge, tells me it may have low/no compression , when I put my finger over spark plug hole I should feel pressure right? I don't. I'm thinking the piston rings may have corroded in the barrels before I freed them up with my dribbling oil in trick, does this sound likely?

I have a manual! and I'm up for stripping the engine but would appreciate any thoughts or advice before I get stuck in, thanks

Could also be the rings have siezed to the piston, yes you should feel something when you put your finger over the plug hole. Best bet is take the top end down to have al ook

More than likely on these engines; also more than likely that the scraper rings are full of carbonised crap, and the valve seats are a horrible mess.... but he needs to open it up and see what it looks like in the bowls of the engine to find out.
