It's more if a "lift" straight upwards motion whilst pushing the stand down with your foot. Usually people try to pull the bike backwards instead. Obviously may not be your issue at all... but that's the simplest explanation I can manage given your description.

You could upload a video of you trying it and we can criticize (help) Thumbs Up Razz
