hi everyone,
I would like some advice as to how to open the seat lock on my newly bought 400/4. The previous owner does not have a key for it.

Are the keys for these universal, or is there a number somewhere on the bike that will let me be able to order a new one?

(or is there a cunning way of prising it open somehow without damaging the lock!)

Thanks for any help

Ps What do people use to clean the non-shiney parts of the engine with?

Cheers

Hi just had to unlock mine without a key, the lock is hollow underneath where the seat post goes in if you look underneath the lock (lie on the floor you will need a light to illuminate it) you can see the locking arm, push the seat down with one hand to push it in as much as possible then insert a very thin flat screwdriver or similar implement against the locking pin and if you exert enough force (be careful) you can hold it open long enough to release the seat and allow it to spring open! and its that easy, took me about 20 attempts and 40 mins or so, so good luck.

I've managed to open it now by using a smallish flat headed screwdriver, inserting it slightly into the lock ant then turning like a key. Only trouble is, if I can do this then any potential thief will be able to as well. I don't know if this means there was a design fault with the lock or that the lock is broken.

The locks are probably just worn out, I wouldn't worry though unless you can do the same with the main ignition.

The lock won't be all that secure anyway. If it were working and someone wanted in they'd just shove a larger screwdriver into it and turn it, breaking the lock.

Sounds like the levers in your lock are stuck in their open position - that lock will only have one or two levers to stick which is why it's not working. You may get lucky and fix it with a load of WD40, if not you can normally dis-assemble the lock and free it up if you have small hands. How it works becomes obvious once you have the shell of the lock off Smile

P.S. - I would have thought it was the ignition key you were supposed to use, or at least the end of it if it looks way too long. Again you can find that out by taking it to bits!
