Mig amd I took a ride out yesterday, our usual happy hunting ground, up to Hawes and the back roads to Devils bridge. Mindfull of the police announcements of blanket coverage of biking roads we were a little more careful than usual.
Got to Hawes with no sign of any police activity, had our brews and butty, set off on the Sedburg road.
Got up to speed and came onto a bunch of four, going quite well. Hooked onto the back marker, turned out to be an R6, the next in line was an R1.
This road is both twisty and narrow, but with plenty of straight stuff to stretch your legs. I wonder what they thought of the old fashioned Kwak up there arses, top box and all as they did their best to drop me. Yup, £600 mates, thats what my fun cost me...... How about you?

My cheap fun is my moped, its not flash or fast, but it gets used for town, and when i overtake people in brand new bmw's etc on my £100 piece of awesomeness my smug grin can be seen for miles Very Happy Also, its rough enough that i dont worry about knocks or bumps... or kerbs... or dirt tracks... or pavements. But id never nip down the pavement as thats illegal and kills kittens Embarassed

I've never quite got the BCF obsession with "Yesterday I went faster on my <insert shitter here> than some bloke on a <insert shiny sportsbike here>.

If you did, it means one of two things:

1) They weren't trying.

2) They're a shit rider.

Either way, it's a bit like patting yourself on the back because you can count to potato faster than a downs syndrome kid.

Mig - Miguel, riding companion, fast, careful, good company. Everyone should have a Mig.
Point of the post was NOT that I can generally make fancy new stuff look silly (their poor riding skills mostly), but that you DONT need the flashist new kid on the block to enjoy motorcycling to the full.
As an aside, this old girl is just hitting 50,000 miles and still runs like a very fast clock, a bit thirsty though at these speeds.... 30mpg, gulp!

There is an article in this months bike mag about 'shit bike club' or something which is a concept where its not worth owning any bike that still has warranty.

I might even go further as to suggest that 1980's snotters for less than a grand can be more fun than a year old sportsbike because at least you'll ride them instead of being paranoid about your license/depreciation/fuel cost/ the weather.

Its a '95 zzr600, its not a snotter! (goes all defensive). But, yes, if it does go bang or I chuck it down the road all I'll have is happy memories and a great deal of respect for 90's stuff.
B roads sort out the stuff made for the road and those designed to go round a track the fastest, dont see many hump back bridges, cattle grids or SUV's coming the other way at Oulton Park.
Anyway, I'm looking at picking up an RS Sprint, real old heavy metal but with quite a bit of potential. It will break my rule of never paying more than a grand for any motorcycle, but it has the strange sort of basic attraction of the unloved and denigrated.

Been doing this for ages, although I do insist on an alloy frame, cartridge forks and radial tyres. I did laugh when after spending Monday twatting about, then Tuesday riding back from a mate's, the GSXR managed 170 odd miles without going onto reserve. Cheap speed.

Don't need an alloy frame. Alloy frames do the same job as Steel frames, its just you need more Alloy for the same strength as steel. Alloy is lighter for the same volume as steel, but strength to weight is about the same.

Damper rod forks aren't great, admittedly and crossplies and bias belts aren't great, but there is a lot more governing the handling of a bike than those things.

They're paying more in depreciation, even when tucked away in their garages. Wink

It's kind of funny that bikes are essentially limited by roads and riders, so there's little real point in buying new. And then I look at the still plummeting sales figures (for everything except bloody "Adventure Sports") and has a sad wondering whether in another 17 years we'll be saying "Lol, my 2012 R1200GS can keep up with the 2029 EcoLectric PlanetSave Personal TransCommuter Pods".
