PostPosted: 16:10 - 03 Mar 2004    Post subject: Ear Plugs Reply with quote

I've decided that after two days of tinitus I should get myself some earplugs to go with my new bike.
I remember following a link from here to a web-site which offered a pack with about 10pairs of each type of ear plugs that they supply so you can find the best for you. I've checked the links page and I’ve used the search and still can’t find the link. I'm prob looking right at it but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
J

Not sure about the link page but I was wondering...

How loud is it on a big bike when compared to riding an NSR? Obviously it's not loud riding on the NSR. So I've never needed earplugs. But I value my hearing and I do alot of music recording. So it's definetely something I want to start using when the time comes for a bike upgrade.

I get tinitus on my bike when wearing my old Vemar, don't when wearing my Shoei. So your helmet's as much a part of it as how loud your bike is.

There are usually people selling big bags of earplugs on ebay.

I think you can even buy them in bulk orders. Which means you could buy a whole summer's worth of riding!

Ste, you know how I taught you how to spell your favourite word 'superior' correctly? Well same rule applies here to your second favourite word. Razz

And where are my free earplugs, eh?

Hi

The main noise in wind noise. Quite a while back one of the bike magazines did a test on helmet noise. They had a particular rider on a CBR600 doing a lap or so of the test track at 100mph wearing different helmets with the microphone for a noise meter in their ear. The quietest helmet was 105db, the noisiest 120db. The db scale is logarithmic, so each 3 point increase is double the noise level, so even the quietest helmet is well over 128 times as noisy as the 82db limit for a motorcycle exhaust. 120db will result in perminant hearing damage within a matter of minutes.

I have never got on with the foam ear plugs, but the moulded ones work well. I got mine from Green Leopard (they do quite a few of the shows).

All the best

Keith

I've got some molded plugs made for me by a bloke from an audiology centre. He came over to a meet at Bassetts Pole that one of the lads from the westmids site organised one night and took moulds for everyone that wanted some. We got a choice of colours and various material types, they are washable and came in a hard case, I think they cost me about £12. That was last year and I've still got them, they're as good as new. You could do what Keith did and get some from a show or see if you have a local hearing centre and ask them to make you some. I find them loads more comfortable than the squashy kind as my Arai is quite a tight fit.

Thanks for the tips, I’ve never worn plugs before so quite liked the idea of getting a selection of different types to try.
As for the thing in ride it was just manky!
One guy kept his plugs in his lids air vents when he didn’t use them, They had bout 10 times the amount of bacteria as those given to a cat and dog to play with!!!!!!

I normally use foam ear plugs but I'm going to get a set of moulded ear plugs this year because I got an ear infection last summer. I'm hoping moulded plugs are going to be easier to keep clean.

I use foam ear plugs which seem to suit me fine. They were a bit painful to start off with, but now they're fine and I couldn't imagine riding without any in. On the times that I have ridden without them it is just horrible!

I thought about getting moulded ones, but at £70 a pop they are quite expensive. I bought a box of 1000 3M ones about a year and a half ago and they are still going.

One thing I would say is that you should put a new pair in every day to reduce the chance of getting an ear infection, and try to replace the same one in the same ear if you take them out!

In reality, I tend to change mine every 2 days maximum and (touch wood) I haven't ever had an ear infection from them.

They cultured the bacteria that they found on ear plugs and done a plate count.

Plugs that had been worn for one day and stored in the vents in between uses had 108,000 bacterial cells.

Plugs that had been worn for two weeks nightly (8 hours) and kept ina case during the day had 29,000 bacterial cells.

Plugs that had been worn for four weeks nightly (8 hours) and kept ina case during the day had 24,000 bacterial cells.

Plugs that had been played with by the pet dog and cat for several days had 14,00 bacterial cells.

Conclusion - wash ear plugs periodically, dry them, replace after 20 days of use, store in their container.

Isn't it to let your cat and dog play with your earplugs? Very Happy Razz
