I work in a supermarket petrol station that shall remain nameless.
(Has the slogan: Sainsburys. Where good fuel costs less.)

I have recently been told off by my manager for serving bikers who where there helmets into the kiosk to pay. When I ask people to remove them I’ve had a few arsy comments back. I was just wondering if anyone else takes theirs off to pay or has an opinion on being asked to remove their helmet.
Thanks
J

In my opinion, it's manners to take it off. Same as it's manners not to be having a conversation on a mobile phone while conducting a transaction with the cashier.

I was brought up to make eye contact and say thank you. Shame half the people behind the counter weren't. Rolling Eyes

I keep my lid on especially during the winter as it's hassle to remove and put back on all those layers.

Would you care to ask your manager if you should ask a woman wearing a veil to remove it?

I would take my lid off out of politeness generally, so I voted lid off.

However, If I couldn't be bothered for some reason, and someone told me to take it off then I would not go back to buy petrol there. it is discrimination in my opinion.

Recently a petrol station near to my house refused to switch the pump on until I removed my lid. I walked up to the counter and I asked why. I was told it was because another biker had done a drive off recently and he wasn't allowed to.

I asked him how many car drive offs they get a week. He said about ten.

I asked how many bike drive offs they get in a year. He said that that one was the first he had ever seen.

Also, my bike has a numberplate, and it can be seen by the CCTV. I'm sure my face was only as recognisable as a driver in a car.

Discrimination sucks.

I used to take mines off but I've started leaving it on lately, as it is nice and quick to just to fill up the bike, run in and pay then right onto the bike again and away. Keeps the queues shorter. Sometimes I get the feeling that they're going to ask me to take it off. I've never really gave it any thought till I read this post. I'd have no problems removing it if I was asked to though.

I don't remove my lid. Fuck that, it means I have to take my gloves off as well. I want to walk into the shop, hand them my card then sign a bit of plastic. If I am going to rob the petrol station I don't think I'd listen when they ask me to remove my lid so that's that arguement out the window.

I can't be bothered taking an extra couple of minutes because of some arsey person behind the till. If they ask you to remove it just go "sorry, I can't hear you, I've got a motorcycle helmet on and earplugs in my ears. Number 3 please" whilst waving your card at them. Smile

When i used to go out on my bike with my dad i would be all wired into the radio. So i would never take it off even if i was asked. I know i have not got a shot gun in my jacket so i cant see the problem in my case at least.

I can understand why they would want lids off.. But as lazy as i am, its not gonna happen. Sorry jay.

I always take my lid off too, if nothing else it helps people to understand anything you might say and as others have mentioned I consider it to be generally well mannered.
At my local petrol station you can't even get petrol without first removing your lid, the cashiers have control over the pumps and won't even set them going unless you remove your lid.

I always take my lid off out of politeness, it's hard to talk to people and properly communicate with a big crash helmet on.

The petrol station where I work, Sainsbury's, have a sign on the door saying "Please remove crash helmets", it's a fair point, it doesn't take long at all to take it off, you can remove it whilst walking to the kiosk, and put it back on whilst walking back.

I remove mine cos it saves hassle from people, but as i've just posted in another topic I always use Tesco so I can pay at the pump. Don't even have to get off of the bike and I can still collect those Clubcard points. Smile
Also you don't get an annoying receipt unless you want one!

Carvell, I assume that they want the helmet removed for security reasons? So if they are not going to ask everyone to remove anything covering their face whats the point?

Also on the point of needing to talk to people, I can talk fine with my helmet on (less so with ear plugs in). Also it's not like you need to talk much:

Cashier:
What pump sir

You
no. 7 please

I always leave my lid on unless i'm planning on having a quick tab stop. I will only remove it if i get refused fuel which i hope will never happen.

I always remove my lid for the same reason as bendy, also they sometimes don't let you take petrol. It's not difficult and takes approximately 60 seconds more on the petrol stop!

The main reason they ask you to is for security, if someone stole your bike and the only lead was that they went and filled it up at the petrol station they would have been refused petrol for not taking their helmet off and thus the bike wouldn't be much use to them.

Either way I'm not bothered, at the end of the day it's up to you but I wouldn't get upset with someone if they asked you to remove your helmet, it's for security reasons mainly to stop thieves so bare that in mind Smile

i always take mine off partly politeness and partly the fact that most garages ask you to via a sign on the door!

I have only been asked around twice in the last seven or so years of my biking life to take off my lid.

Like Ste says, its too much off a hassle, especially if no que and I have the right change.

If my missus is with me I get her to pay, then they know I cant leave without her. Smile

Generally I take it off, but occaisionally do leave it on. Never been asked to take it off.

It is illegal to wear it when you're not on the bike tho, so they are perfectly reasonable to ask you to remove it.

Really? Where does it say that?

I believe it is also illegal to push a bike without a helmet on.

I take mine off, mostly out of politeness.

Its also easier to get warm, read the papers and have a quick bite to eat inside the petrol station without your crash hat on Razz

That and the local petrol stations get well arsey if you leave it on, so its just not worth the hassle.

I've never taken my lid off when paying for petrol, despite seeing signs etc.

I've never been asked to take it off either.

No offence to the petrol staff or anything. If they asked me to remove it, then fair play I will but it's too much hassle to mess about taking your lid off and stuff if your literally running in to pay for your petrol then off you go again.

If I'm stopping for a break then yes I will remove it.

I normally take my lid off out of politeness. The guy at the local garage knows me and as such has told me not to bother taking it off as he knows me anyway. If for some reason I couldn't be bothered to take it off and someone asked me to remove it I would probably tell them to bollocks, what are they gonna do? You've already put the petrol in.

Hi

Never remove my lid when getting petrol. Never been asked to, and if I was I would probably just start going to another petrol station.

Taking a lid on and off continuously, especially when you wear glasses, can get painful. A few years back I landed up with the skin between my ear and my head starting to crack, which was almost certainly caused by taking my lid on an off all the time.

All the best

Keith

Good point Keith. If it's going to become a health issue then I would rather annoy the petrol station staff than get any problems like what you mentioned Keith. To be honest though, I can't see why it is a problem for people to leave their lids on unless they are wearing a black visor or something.

I always take it off, not only for reasons of politeness but to be perfectly honest I find it nice to remove my gloves and lid during a petrol stop to get a bit of air flowing around my body and generally refresh myself.

Don't get me wrong, I don't feel restricted in my gear, it's just nice to treat a petrol stop as mini break, it enables you to relax, give your body and mind a 5 minute breather so that you can continue on your journey (whether it be 10 miles or 100 miles) in a better state of mind.
