I tried to negociate myself from Darlington to a place called Evenwood which is 13 miles. I have VERY recently passed my CBT and have no road experience in a car.

Although this is supposed to be 13 miles i managed to clock up 69 miles trying to get from A to B. I even ended up on the A1(M) which i am not aloud with L plates Embarassed

I suppose this could be put down to me being new to the road, but i really do think that i suffer from a terrible sense of direction. Anyone else seem to suffer this? Mr. Green

Although i do have to say, i have been though some smashing A and B roads and thorugh some villages Shocked

No, but then I totally love maps, and have explored many many many roads across the country. Before I go anywhere different, I plot my route on the map or even google maps, write the instructions on a piece of paper, then put this in my tank bag.

The only times I 'get lost' are on purpose, when I head off down roads I've never been before. Thumbs Up

Yea clanger i think i should take a leaf out of your book mate. Been looking on google maps to try and work out where the F**k i've been and i really can't. I think the 6 P's are needed here for me to manage.

Although i can see the fun in "getting lost" i don't fancy doing it on my way home from work after a 12 hour night shift Razz

Hey Terentius you should become a taxi driver.Last 3 or 4 times I've been picked up they say "where you going?" I tell them and they ask me how to get there!!

Next time I might ask them how much discount I'm getting for being their navigator.
Seems it's long gone when a taxi driver actually knows his and the surrounding areas....and they're screwed if you don't have the postcode for the SatNav

You can use google maps for directions before setting off and print out if need be.
But for 13 miles you'd probably be OK just mentally remembering the main road numbers or place names along the route?

Some areas are rather confusing with no good landmarks lke hills to keep to one side or the other so you have a rough idea you're at least heading the right direction more or less.
There's also a problem with poor signage in some places as they've been nicking them for aluminium scrap.

YEP! that's the kind of thing i would do! Its a odd thing, I don't have a ounce of common sense either. I would say i was fairly intelligent. I did well in school and am looking to get my nursing degree to earn some decent money and get a decent bike Very Happy

Think i need to do alot more practical on the road before that happens mind.

My girlfriend is from Boro, Where abouts are you based Germ?

Look at the route on a map and write down the names of places and road numbers in the same direction as you're going. Then follow the road signs to those places. It might take a little longer than a direct route, but you'll get there eventually.

For example, going out of Darlington the most direct route is the A68 towards Bishop Auckland. As you're approaching the A1(M), there's a big sign that says "Bishop Auckland (A68)" pointing in the right direction. Then you go in a straight line until you come to the end of the road, go left, and turn off where it's signed until Evenwood. The only direction you need to remember the whole way is "turn left at junction".

ETA: I used Google Street View to find those signs. It's pretty useful for getting the feel of the turns on a route if you're unsure.

That brings me back memories lol

Back when I had my YBR after doing CBT was out one night with a friend from Darlo and we had agreed to go to Staindrop him having took to riding better than I had pretty much left me for dead in the twisties and I lost him.

Still don't know how the hell I managed it to this day but after 45 minutes riding around looking for the sign for Staindrop I eventually arrived at Sedgefield Doh!

Made sure to look at a few maps of my area now and make sure if I'm out with anyone we both know where we're going.

I find my navigation is worse on the bike for some reason. In a car - no probs. On the bike - guaranteed I'll lose my way once or twice. Confused

Now after trial and error I plot my route beforehand then rely on Google Maps/Navigation on my phone (no tank bag and hate stopping to read map). I use my headphones as ear plugs and if I go wrong Google Nav tells me how to get back on course. As the 3G drains my battery I take my charger.

I don't think you would be that loud with L plates on either, I mean even the two strokes aren't that noisy, now if you were on there on perhaps a bigger bike with open pipes, then you would definitely be aloud person on the A1(M) other than that I would imagine you would be quite a quiet person.

HTH Thumbs Up

I really hate getting lost. Decided to ride up to Birmingham (from Basingstoke) last November. After 2 hours or so of riding and getting very cold, managed to get lost going from the M42 to his house. Managed to find a petrol station, so that I could check where I was, grab a coffee and warm up a bit. Only it was dark, so people weren't allowed in the shop, so had to order a coffee through the window. Then found out that they had no hot water Sad

Eventually managed to find my way by using CoPilot on my HTC, balanced very precariously on my yoke, as it kept turning itself off, or muting itself. Must invest in a tankbag!

Indeed! I look back and cringe at how bad I was on the roads when I first started at 17, surprising how much has changed in just over 2 years of experience.

But to be fair, most of Co Durham is like that....the only exceptions are the areas that somehow managed to escape from the 1950's without the rest of the county noticing Very Happy
I grew up in Burnmoor so I know of what I speak!! Actually I've not been back in about 20 years,it may have limped as far as the 1970's by now Wink

Was living in Darlington. A rough part of Darlo. Fucking burgled twice. Im from South Wales and the misses is from middlesbrough. i also lived London for 8 years.

Evenwood ain't so bad! People are really friendly and its quiet. Where i lived before there was riot vans in the street every other night and always someone shouting/fighting pissed up.

I like it here!! Been here for 2 months now Thumbs Up
