Riding through Knightsbridge i saw a motorbike in-front of me with a huge (wide) rear tyre and i noticed it had a belt? instead of a chain. Are these rare or quite common now? It was a Harley looking type of bike.

Hyosung GV650 used a belt, but only has a 180 rear tyre.

I once followed something that resembled a car tyre, think it was a Suzuki Intruder Laughing

Quite common nowadays, especially with the cruiser brigade. Some jap cruisers have them as standard and its very common on harleys.

Am i the only one here who is sufficiently juvenile to always call them 'Anal Intruders'?

It's not just cruisers that use belt drive.

How long do they last and do you notice any difference between belts and chains?

Not moving, it's likely lunched its engine. Wink

My belt is pleasantly smooth and quiet; I'm not looking forward to going back to a chain. It's lasting OK, but there's always a risk of dragging debris round between the belt and pulley and damaging it.

I'm also finding that it's quite sensitive to proper tensioning, and it's not zero maintenance: it can get a good squeak going if not given a smear of vegetable oil now and again. If it goes, it'll be more than the bike's worth to replace it, because there's no competition to supply the relatively tiny market.

So, qualified thumbs up, but I'll be cursing it when it finally shreds.

It is claimed that they last longer than chains, Require less maintenance, are cleaner due to no lube etc. It is also said that they're smoother and quieter too. There is probably more power loss compared to a well maintained chain however.

The only two bikes with HUGE rear tyres and belt drive as standard are both Harley-Davidsons.

1) V-Rod

2) Rocker
