I fucking hate pushy telesales callers especially one's from debt collection departments.

My younger brother is in a fair bit of debt and the amount of phone calls that I take because he put the house number down instead of his mobile is a joke. Also the time at which they call, 10.30pm at night... really?

"When will he back we NEED to speak to him urgently".

Me: "I don't know, it's a matter of catching him".

"Can you give me a time?"

Me: "Are you listening to what I'm saying?".

"Yes but we need a time so we can get in touch with him".

Phone goes down as soon as I ask them where they're calling from but they soon call back and it's fucking relentless.

What's the best way to deal with these scum bags? (Apart from him paying off all his debts, which aint going to happen any time soon).

Give them his mobile number, give them his works phone number. Cuntish thing to do perhaps, but he needs to man up and face his issues rather than letting you or other members of the family suffer the hassle of taking his calls for him all the time.

Perhaps if he actually speaks to them they may be able to work something out with him.

Tell them he's moved out. Or answer the call but say nothing and put the phone on the side. Some of them aren't allowed to hang up and must wait for you to.

Definitely hand over his mobile number and tell them in no uncertain terms that relentlessly calling innocent family members is harrassment. They will ignore that completely but should at least start calling him directly. I know its not a permanent solution but maybe unplug your phone after 9pm?

Either:

a) Don't answer the phone. Turn the ring tone to off or unplug the phone. Mates and anyone that matters will ring you on your mobile.

or

b) Answer and say nothing. When they say who they are put the phone down.

or

c) Answer and let them listen to nothing. Or better still ear piercingly horrible noise, music, babble, the most dull/insane youtube rant/diatribe/boring waffle about whatever, or that Geordie dude yelling at the telesales guy telling him to fuck off on endless loop. If the speaker is right next to the phone it doesn't have to be that loud.

This is becuase thay want to cause maximum distress and annoyance to the family in the hope that you will put extra pressure on him to pay the debt.

Tell them you have never heard of him, you have just had your phone line connected and this is your new number.

I've got debt collectors phoning me, but it isn't for me. Whoever the debt is with has got the wrong number. I just say they've got the wrong number and if they can take me off the list.

Works fine until another company takes the debt on, and they get my number. But only get one or two calls from them before they take it off.

Might be worth trying that.

Record the next call, being very polite.

Give them his mobile on this call, and express that this is the last time they have any permission to use this line, further contact on such will be their agreement to invoicing them 25pound per time for 'helping'. Ask them, if under the Data Protection Act they are allowed to discuss ANY of your relatives sensitive financial dealings with you without first notifying the relative, this includes informing (and confirming) you of a debtors account.

Then, as you wrap the call up ask if there's anyting you can help with, but quickly say "no?, thanks.. bye".

This gives you a legally enforceable opportunity to bill them for your wasted time and grounds to notify police or whatever of harrasment.

(I suppose if you string it along long enough, you might actually be able to bill them for what he owes!)

Me, I always just tell mates to say "as far as I'm concerned I have an account with your 'client', my contract is legally set up with them and I advise you notify them to contact me or i will take it as a good faith gesture the account will be written off.
