Any tips? The bike is bought, going to collect later. Obviously investigating whether it is insured at the moment and know paperwork bits but is there anything else.. do's and don'ts?

Bit daft to buy without seeing but the auction has to be representative and the seller has bucket loads of positive feedback.

It's a Malaguti 125. Before you all pull this face: Shocked my fella's friend got one new so knows the bike inside and out, and it's essentially a re-badged Yamaha XT125 as it is Malaguti who actually assemble the XT in Europe, parts are easy to come by, and we won the bike for £920 with 550 miles on the clock Smile

Not sure what you're looking for in terms of advice. You've bought it already. Hand over money, take motorcycle away.

If you're riding it away make sure you have a lid, insurance, tax and MOT if applicable. Check there's oil, check lights work, brakes, condition/pressure of tyres. Running engine would be a bonus. And take it easy on ride home.

At that mileage any faults should stand out, it should be like a brand new bike.

I've bought many bikes from Ebay and it's absolutly fine as long as you have done your home work and asked the relevant questions of the buyer.

A good tip is to always check there is enough oil in the engine especially if your are driving it back. At that kind of milage there should be no marks / wear unless the buyer has disclosed any and the engine should be sweet.

Get your own insurance sorted to ride it back, prevents any possible issues.

I don't know what you mean. If you're going to ride it away, you get it insured. Did you mean taxed? That should be listed in the advert.

As well as the V5C, make sure you see a bill of sale that shows that it belongs to the seller, and create a bill of sale that shows that it now belongs to you.

HPI check it, ideally based on the VIN.

It can't be mis-representative, but they're not quite the same thing.

Anything that it says must be true, but the seller doesn't have to disclose faults that would be reasonable for you to have asked about, based on the age and condition.

That said, it's reasonable for you to assume that it's as-new; put that condition on the bill of sale.

The engine should be stone cold when you arrive, and when you start it up, work all the controls yourself. At the slightest hint or suspicion that something's not right with either the title or the condition, run, do not walk.

All that said, there are more honest people and bikes out there than rogues and lemons, just keep your wits about you.

I just checked completed listings on Ebay so I take it it's the one with the broken steering lock? this one....

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2011-MALAGUTI-125-VERY-GOOD-CONDITION-/250886738241?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item3a6a03d141

check how much damage there is from the attempted theft & definitely hpi check it first as it may have finance on it being so new....make sure it's had its running in service too (usually at approx 500miles)from the dealer & stamped in the book...

...you really needed to do all this before bidding though, hope it works out for you Thumbs Up

Insurance wise my other half can ride other bikes with permission. It is insured so that's ok, just going to hpi check it.

Steering lock thing is ok, friends had the same bike and the same thing happened lol Smile

I seriously hope you are joking, nobody is going to sign a bill of sale stating the used bike they are selling is in as new condition - because it isn't, no vehicle that has been used on the road is and it is very unreasonable to expect it to be.

Really should've done the HPI check before we bid I know - I was on the road for four and a half hours yesterday so didn't get the chance and he didn't think of it. Thankfully, it's all clear. Whew!

Will see about the service - on my YBR it's 600 miles so it's possible this one hasn't had it, but again we're expecting that it needs an oil change and all that.

I'm playing chauffeur and then my boyfriend is buying, his friend is coming along too (the guy who also has the same bike) so he knows about the specifics of the machine.

Why not? What's wrong with it?

See what I'm getting at? Judge the seller by their reaction.

The bike is probably honest, but as noted, it's had a theft attempt, so it's definitely worth have a careful look for drop damage.

Oh, be aware that your boyfriend's "other bike" cover will likely be for bikes that he doesn't own, and which are insured for someone else to ride them.

So, technically he won't be covered if he buys it, nor if the seller cancels his own insurance the minute you ride off (which he will, if he's smart).

Probably not going to be an issue, just something to be aware of.

The bike that will be ridden has to be insured though too even if someone's policy does allow them to ride other bikes.

The bike is still insured and the seller says it's fine for us to pick up and ride using the "ride other bikes" insurance.

Good point about checking it's bikes he doesn't own - won't be a problem though, the boys can swap bikes (friend also has "other bikes" insurance) if need be. Smile

Bit of a tricky one I guess as he's not wanting to sort through the insurance (as it can take so flipping long to find the best quote) until he's got the bike in his own hands as it were, bit different to buying from a dealer as I did.
