It is the best, unfortunately it is also a carcinogen and you can no longer use or buy it.

Yeh creosote was good. Smelt nice on a hot summers day.

Nowadays B&Q do big tubs of wood paint that has protective stuff in it. I redo the shed doors and some other fence panels every 2-3 years with it.

Dirt cheap aswell. £6.99 or something for 20l or something like that.

There are so many different types of creosote it is unreal. They used to use it to treat some medical conditions and preserve meat as well as wood.

Some is carcinogenic, some isn't, either way none of it is nice stuff.

I used to use creosote..Arggh it burns.

Quote:
Creosote is a chemical cocktail obtained by distilling coal tar and is classified as carcinogenic because the mixture contains benzopyrene (BaP).

Scientists used to think that as long as there were no more than 50 parts of BaP per million in creosote, it was harmless. Now they've concluded that even such a tiny amount can cause cancer in humans. So from June 30 2003 the sale of creosote and creosote-treated wood will be banned.

I should be dead.

[edit] The sale of old railway sleepers is still allowed.

Quote:
a late amendment to the EU directive means that these timber slabs can still be sold even though most standard garden uses will become illegal.

The Department of Trade & Industry rules state that creosote-treated wood must not be used "in parks, gardens and outdoor recreational leisure facilities where there is a risk of frequent skin contact", or in "containers intended for growing purposes".

Haha, my grandparents used to own a sawmill. They had a creosote treatment tank as big as a swimming pool and pallets of wooden stobs would get lowered into hot creoste by crane to marinate for a week. Never did them any harm.

Mind you, they both died of cancer.

Used diesel engine oil is a fantastic preservative, just don't touch it even when dry as carbon still rubs off.

Cuprinol do a good wood preservative as well.
