Want to get a leather jacket for my girlfriend before she gets here (surprise type thing), but all the "ladies" jackets on ebay are either fashion jackets with no armour and thin soft leather, or their just plain naff.
What sort of mens size would equate to a woman's 12? Any specific makes more suitable than others? Mr. Green
Not got a huge budget Embarassed

Gotta try them on.

I found that in general, mens jackets were too big in the shoulders, too tight round the chest and a bit too long - the length was annoying when leaning forward in riding position, you'd probably get away with it sitting upright.

What's your budget?

I feared as much Confused she has narrow shoulders so that'd be a problem. Budget is in the "used category" up to perhaps 80 quid Embarassed

My other half just brought a jacket off E-bay. it's either Sidi or Spidi, can't remember which. It's got armour in the shoulders and elbows but no back protector. They had the same one at D+K in Stoke for £40

Does it have to be leather?

You can get some nice textile stuff that tends to be a bit cheaper.

Sounds a bit weird, but what "shape" is your gf? Personally, I find men's jackets too big round the shoulders, too long on the arms and a bit tight on the boobs and hips.

Size 12 female = 40 male (I think)

It might be better to surprise her by taking her out and buying her a jacket (if you can afford it) so she can try it on instead. I know exactly what size I take, but I still have to try shedloads of jackets on before I find a good fit Mad

Try these, are they any good?

Bought a nice textile jacket for my OH a while back.
A Tecnik Sequoia jacket, complete with Knox armour, about £130+ even in a sale iirc.
However, even after trying it on at the shop, she still doesn't particularly like the fit when sat on the pillion seat - she says it rides up (probably cos she's got a short body).

Currently looking for a replacement jacket, but for some reason she's still not keen on trying leathers

Now we are getting near to the end of the biking 'season' it may be worth keeping an eye out at your local bike stores. I picked up my textile jacket (gortex Alpinestars jobby) for £60 from Orwells (Suffolk). They had a really good selection of women's jackets. That being said, it really does depend how much ladies gear they stock.

I'm a size 12 and 5' 4". My first jacket was a textile man's jacket - a Richa 'Bison', size S - which I bought in a sale reduced from £199 to £49.99!! It fits quite well, but is not as shapely as my ladies leather jacket. I also tried on a lot of other men's jackets in that shop which were all too big or too long in the sleeves.

I also wanted a leather jacket but most of the ladies jackets were naff and the men's were too big again. Why do the men get all the nice designs and colours too and us ladies get left with plain black, shitty beige or turquoise? I wanted a blue, silver and white patterned one! I ended up buying a ladies Richa 'Anna' (black with dark grey panels)which fits very well. Ladies jackets are also tailored for the feminine figure!

Yes, it is possible to wear a man's jacket but it won't fit or look as nice as a proper ladies jacket.

I think the biggest problem with men's jackets are the width of the shoulders and the arm length.

If the armour is likely to move around a lot, which it probably will on most women with narrow shoulders, then it is almost not worth having in place...

Be careful getting one off ebay, you could end up with something that really doesnt fit.

You could take her to try some on in shops, take note of the name, size etc....... then try and get it cheaper on EBay.

Hiya
My advice is to try a load of jackets on. Getting good bike gear for women is a real pain. I have 2 jackets one is a revit jacket which is a mans and one is a frank thomas ladies jacket.

I found that Frank thomas do some really good ladies bike gear at realistic sizes and prices I would check them out! Thumbs Up

Ive been wearing men's biking kit forever...I have very long arms and legs, and unfortunately women's kit is made for the petite amongst us!!!

The only thing I find with trousers is, too much extra room at the flies...and jackets have wider shoulders. But I dont really care if I look like michelin man when riding...I'd rather not look like a woman, because men drivers CAN get a bit funny, and do silly things when they know you are female (especially white van drivers).

Four years old thread or not:

Of course they can.
Fuxache, what a twatworthy question.

My jacket is not a "ladies" jacket, its just a standard bike jacket I bought brand new in a bike shop 25 years, none of this fancy shit, I just saw it and thought "That's the sorta thing what Marlon Brando wore, that's what I want!", so I bought a one of them and its served me perfectly well for all those 25 years, even now that it doesn't zip up due to my extreme fatness.

Ladies' fuckin' jackets Rolling Eyes
