Should I be paying?

As a few of you may remember, last year I broke my engine. Then lost my job early this year, and only just started back working again.

My engine has been at the garage being completely rebuilt, for the past 14months (very long time I know but that was partly my fault for not having any money when out of work.)

So in late July I started work again, and told the garage that I was going to finish off paying for it. And they said that they would start rebuilding it and it would be done by Friday.
That Friday came, I phone them up to see if it was done. They say that they are waiting on some gaskets, (that I had been told were ordered and had already paid for about 6months ago, even seen the envelope they were in)

So I phoned back on the Friday again, to be sure it was done. Same story but something else. So that time I left it 2weeks.
This was the story up until about 3weeks ago when I went in one morning after an interview to see if it was ready.
This was after having been told it was actually finished and all they had to do was put the rocker covers back on.
I go in and the bloke behind the counter, says they haven't even started it yet. Mad

But I get reassurance it would be done in the next 2weeks.

I phone up still not done.

Yesterday my mum phones them up and they say yes it is done, everything is sorted come pick it up tomorrow. MY mum told them it would be around 5 as I leave work at 4.30 and she can't lift it.

Sorted...

Or not. She is just about to leave to come pick me up, and she gets a call. They said that they have just gone to make a final check and the gearbox isn't working, so they will have to strip the whole thing down again.

AT MY FUCKING EXPENSE!!!

My mum asked if they could have checked it was working after putting the bottom end back together. And the told her no, because it needs to be fully built to be checked.
That's funny because i'm sure a gearbox will click in with no barrel or anything, (or am I a little bit dumb?).

Surely it is their fuck up, not mine. So I don't have to pay them another £300 for all new gaskets and labour?

Frankly I think you are lucky he kept the engine that long. If it had been me, I'd have scrapped it after its been kicking round the workshop for over a year.

You had a contract with them to rebuild the engine.
If they messed up and have to rebuild it again, that's not in the contract. That's at their expense.

Why did you take 14 months to pick it back up?
Why are you rebuilding a fucked engine?
Why didn't you just buy a new running one and put it in your bike?
Is there any point asking these questions?
