I'm looking to get the valve clearances looked at on my GPZ 500 since I've done over 5k miles on it since I bought it, and it was 2k miles since it was last done before I bought it.

My question is... how much should I budget for getting a garage to do it?

Performance seems to be lacking, it doesn't quite have that throwing me backwards factor.

How often are the clearences meant to be done?

I'd be surprised if it were once every 7k.

Its actually pretty easy to do them on the gpz, if you go over to ex-500.com there is a video walk through. A garage should be able to check them in an hour or so as long as there are no stubborn screws/bolts etc. Add another hour or two if they need to adjust them.
If its a euro model it'll need the coolant replacing too.
The carbs should also be synced after the valves have been adjusted. But whether they do or not is a different matter.
Add another 30 mins on for that, its another easy job you could do yourself.

I believe the manual states every 8K

Edit: just checked my shop manual, its every 10 thousand kilometers, which is 6.2k miles.

Amazingly, every 6K/year!

They are screw and locknut though, so not so bad...

To the OP, you'll probably find an oil and filter change and new spark plugs will have more of an effect than anything else.

Forgot to mention, a main dealer will probably charge double what a small garage will.

That is typical Kawasaki.

ZXR750 was every 6k too, ZX9 is every 8k. The same year CBR is like 16k

Ah not as expensive as I was thinking then.

I changed the oil myself put some Castrol Power 1 in it 10w40, didn't really seem to do anything in all fairness.

If the adjusters are locknut they are very easy to check/adjust.For the cost of a suitable spanner and a set of feeler gauges, you will have spare money for an air filter, which if not cleanable, will make quite a differance to the performance of the engine once replaced.

From my extensive experience, they seldom need to be actually adjusted (although you do tend to tweak them back down to the smallest value while you're in there).

Comparing them to a CBR is comparing fish with fowl though as I'm pretty sure a CBR takes bucket and shims? Locknut adjusters = easy to do but needs done more frequently. Bucket and shim = ballache to do but only once in a blue moon. You pays your money and takes your choice.

The VFR tappet service interval is something ludicrous like every 24k miles (bucket and shim). I ignored this and eventually checked them at 45k miles and they were still within tolerances.

It usually says something like "check and adjust if necessary". There is every chance you'll get in there and not need to touch them.

Being locknut ones on a GPZ, if they were out of adjustment, they would tend to get noisy. If it's down on power a bit and due a service, balancing the carbs and cleaning the air filter would be more likely to do the trick.

Adjusting tappets on a GPZ 5 is easy... BUT. To get the rocker cover off you need to pull out the two coolant feed pipes into the cylinder head, if they are a bit corroded it can be a bitch. Then when you lift he rocker cover be absolutely careful to catch / account for two metal dowels that sit just by the camchain tunnel.
If you are not careful, they will immediately leap into the bowels of the engine... Be warned!

My 9R is every 8k, but it's on bucket and shim.

My fazer at 34k didn't need a single shim changing and it had never been done.

I doubt I'll waste the time tearing it apart!
