I have recently started a new job (on Monday) and it is shit. I need out of it now (or more precisely on Tuesday).

I liked the job I was in (to some degree anyway) and the job which I have now was a tranfer so I assumed I would be doing exactly the same job but this is not the case.

I have moved to a new area recently and this was the main reason for taking this new job as it is closer to my home.

I have been considering writing letters to various companies around my new area and see if anyone is currently looking for employees - you know what they say: "if you don't ask; you don't get", but I dont know how to start my letter.

Should I write something along the lines of: "I have just moved to the area and I am looking for work", or will they think I have no skills and I am looking for any job.

Any advice ?

Or does anyone want to write me a letter?

If it is good I will throw some karma your way and maybe a couple of £s if I get a job through it.

Looking for any type of job really; although I am a skilled baker to trade I want a career change while I still can.

Do you have a CV? If not get one, I will bet there are templates on the web.

Or go to a recruitment agency, they might give you some free advice on CVs, cover letters, etc. Even menial minimum wage jobs these days seem to want a CV.

Dear future boss,

Give me a job even though I'll be fed up with it by day one. I don't have a CV and even if I did, I'd be resigning and asking for my owed holiday pay before you've finished reading it.

You should be aware that I'm entitled to everything cos it's the law and I hope you look forward to a long relationship facing each other over industrial tribunals as much as I do.

love,

Gazz

P.S. Gis a go on your daughter/missus/ both as I can't be arsed to have a wank.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I take this opportunity to write as having recently relocated to this area I am seeking employment within my skill set, I have attached my CV and would appreciate my details being kept on file for a while so I can be considered for suitable roles you may have in the short future.

Thanks in advance,

Joe Bloggs.

That's pretty much what I'd do, worst that happens is it's thrown in the bin and you've lost nothing.

Read the covering letters section in link I posted. You need to go into a LOT more detail and make it specific to the firm you're writing too.

Being brutally honest, I'm employed, never been out of work as yet since 16 and if I send my CV off, it's a 98% chance i get an interview, the last 3 roles I checked out I didn't go for in the end, rather stayed where I am.

This is because:

I opt for roles I know I can do, and have a proven record in doing.
I know how to perform in an interview.
I know how to write a letter to get me thru' the door. (hence the above).(yes, I would do a more detailed, targeted one for myself for a role I wanted but I did that in under 30secs, OP wanted a quick reply he got one.)

I sound like a seriously arrogant muppet writing this, but it's just honesty. last job I turned down was CPP because I don't want an employer dictating my personal and/or social life for me, which they have a section on. Karma

Fair enough.

If something that short landed on my desk it'd be sifted out sharpish though Wink

to be honest that letter Steve wrote is a perfect fishing letter (apart from maybe adding a company name in there).

All you are trying to do at this stage is get seen, your cv has the skills in it and you dont know what role you are applying for so cannot make it job specific.

Just send steves letter and your cv around any companies with a field that fits your background. You never know they may be just about to advertise for a role which you could fill.

Just put in steves letter something along the following, 'I have researched *company* excellent record in *field*, and I'm enthusiastic about the chance to participate with an industry leader in the field."

that sounds better than written, basically something though to show its specific.

Hence me putting 'worst that happens is it get's shoved in the bin and you've lost nothing' Wink

People these days appear to search endlessly for jobs and while this is credible, they form a common symptom.

Robot.

They start to send out the same bit of toss they wrote to every single place, and in the end each place get's a standardised bit of stuff with different names. It's like 20 people sent the same template in, changing 1 or 2 words each.

Me, I add my character to the spiel. It's a standard letter, but it's my standard letter... and when this is noticed and they pull me in for a freindly chat, they get a sample in person and so far, I've not done badly.

I've also had a few agencies ring me the last couple weeks offering jobs, either because i've registered with them a while ago or applied for a role they're handling. They then take the CV, match it up to other roles they got an ask if i'm interested.

People complain there's no jobs, they can't find anything, it's better to find work when while you're in work....
Simply showing an employer who you actually ARE is enough, they want a person with character, a proper personality.... not someone who can show that they know how to copy a cover letter. Karma
