The only hassle I've ever had when filling the bike up has been at Supermarket petrol stations. May be a coincidence, I don't know...

Never had any issues at Shell, Jet etc

That's just ridiculous, though Confused

I give them top marks for a more original excuse than 'we need to check your age' Very Happy

I tend to fill up at an unmanned ASDA station 'cos it's on my way to work, so I never take it off, neither do any of the other bikers I've seen fuelling there...

I always remove my helmet & gloves at fuel stations; not because I've been asked to, but simply because I find it easier and less restrictive than doing so with my bulky Nitro lid on. Laughing

It'd be all well and good if the stations just said open and outright "It's company policy. I don't make the rules, I just follow them."
But trying to force compliance through deception is just wrong. Neutral Guess they figure, because they're such a big business, they could piss off all the bikers they want, because at the end of the day they have income from all around the country - and not just from bikers.

Doesn't make it right though.

Went into the post office to tax the Firestorm. Flip lid flipped up, hands full of documents, gloves. Got a sharp order from the (Asian) teller to take my lid off. Just then, a Securicor type with his mate comes in, full helmets, stab vests etc.
They did there business and cleared off.
I then enquired, politely, what was the difference?
They are carrying large amounts of money, I was told.
Well, I replied, so am I.
You shouldnt tell everyone that, I was told.
So, I replied, warming to the subject. Its all right for two strapping men who you cant rekognise through their helmets, to come in, with full bullet proof protective gear and you dont bat an eyelid, but a customer, obviously with his hands full, has to take off a helmet that will only prove his greying hairdo?
Yes, now take off your helmet.
Knowing when I am beaten, I took it off, but not before muttering 'discrimination, something you should know about' to the (rather nice looking) young Asian girl.
I tried.......

If that were the case then I'd be keeping my helmet on intentionally to get a bit of a buzz.

I love the smell of fuel.

Isn't a helmet more likely to fill with dangerous explosive fumes when there isn't a head in it?

Since petrol vapour is heavier than air, you'd have to turn your lid upside down and put it on the ground to get it filled with TEH DETH GASS.

Maybe that's what they want us to do. Enemy action!

This sort of thing makes me smile. I work in a petrol station. We are told:
Law doesnt require helmet removal although company policy says we can ask a biker to remove his helmet to check age, MAINLY WHEN BUYING FAGS OR BOOZE. Also it says that we are NOT to autherise pumps if the person is sat on the bike or holding it upright. It has to be 'secure' (ie on its stand) This is to stop it falling over or the biker getting covered in petrol if it gushes out.
When the area manager was in, a homosexual on a Harley bowled up, still sat on the bike with lid on and was filling, i had autherised it. The area manager demanded my reasoning and i explained as its not required by law i wasnt happy to ask the "homosexual" to get off his bike and start stripping Shocked Long story short, i was forced to stop ALL THE PUMPS on the forecourt (all 14 of them) and use the tannoy to 'demand' he parked up and took his lid off. EVERYONE in the station and forecourt looked at him. He was not a happy fucking chappy!! Refused point blank and took off with £12 of fuel!! Laughing I forgot to take down his reg! How silly of me Laughing

Morrisons were absolutely spot on with this one, whilst the rider wasn't wearing chaps or tassles, he was riding a ghey bike. Quite unforgivable and the forecourt attendant was absolutely correct, in my view.

I love the way its because 'they need to validate the age of the biker'.

Bullshit, you have to be 16 to ride a moped anyway. Anyone that is younger than that and is illegally riding the moped with no licence and insurance are they going to be stupid enough to go to a petrol station? I think not.

My thoughts as well. Chances are, if they've stolen it, they aren't going to pay to fill it up lol.

I don't really care if someone has their lid on, if they are on their bike or not. Long as they pay, its all good!

Then again, some of the people at work are a bit power happy! Love telling people off.

Provide me with a helmet shelf...and the top of the pump isn't a shelf.

On long rides, sometimes i'm quite happy to take my lid off and take out my earplugs for a minute or two.

Funnily enough, I work at Morrisons Razz.

When I inevitably get send over to do the petrol station and I see a Sikh, or someone dressed in religious clothing that means you are unable to see their face waiting at the pump, I will point blank refuse to serve them unless they remove it so I can 'validate their age', just to prove my point. Maybe then Morrisons and all the other stupid places would realise that their argument is totally floored.

I would do that, I'm not joking. Then when they discipline me I would point out that there is no difference from if I had asked a biker to remove their helmet in order to 'validate their age' .

This doesn't make sense to me.

If someone was going to rob a store then they would keep their helmet on regardless of the store policies.

Store Keeper: "Oh, mr robber please can you take your helmet off as it's store policy"

Mr Robber: "Oh really, Aaah, i was going to rob you but now that I have to take my lid off then I guess I won't"

Makes no fricking sense to me.

I think it's policy at Total stations. I don't buy fuel there because it's the only place I've been told to remove my helmet. You don't need to see most perople's faces to know they are older than 16.

Bingo. It would be every bit as effective to put up a sign saying "Robbing this store is strictly prohibited".

It's a silly reasoning. I can't imagine someone rolling up in a helmet with the intent to rob the place and going 'oh, oh there's a sign. We can't rob this place. It's prohibited. All right lads, back in the car. We'll go to that one down the road. There's no sign there.'

I really do worry about the 'logic' of some of these places.

Haha - I agree - that's like assuming that when 'SLOW DOWN' is written all other the road, people will actually slow down. I am certainly much more likely to go 'NO I BLOO¤%&/¤%¤"* WON'T SLOW DOWN!' Twisted Evil

I don't mind doing it if they are honest about the reasoning. If an attendant say 'could you remove your helmet please, it's company policy'. I will cause it's not his fault. I will moan about it and take my time but I'll still do it.

I hate those signs in Tescos though, that say 'motorcyclists, help us to help you by removing your helmet' How the fuck does it help me?

I tend to think I can avoid supermarkets need for control by just paying at pump, but the other day, the pump was stopped for someone to tell me to get off the bike while refueling.

Might be a fun end to the 25th MAG rage-ride. Pop round to the local crypto-fascist fuel shop, helmets on, sit on bikes, block all the pumps, see who blinks first.

Sorry, Officer, could you explain more clearly exactly what offence I'm committing?
