Travelling North on the A34 Friday, somewhere near Oxford these 4 bikes pass me. all the same and have odd racks on them.

20 minutes later I pass them parked up in the services just before M40

So, anyone know who they are and why have those racks on?

Could they be seats for a rear facing cameraman? Possibly for filming the Tour of Britain Cycle race?

EDIT: One of the riders has "TV" stickers on his helmet.

I didn't notice the 'TV' on one of the lids until you said that.

Could well be the answer

The "TV" on the lid gave it away.

How do they get round the bit in the RTA which does actually say motorcycle passengers must be properly 'seated' and facing the direction of travel?

Not sure which bit that is. My emphasis.

The Highway Code wrote:
You MUST NOT carry more than one pillion passenger who MUST sit astride the machine on a proper seat. They should face forward with both feet on the footrests. You MUST NOT carry a pillion passenger unless your motor cycle is designed to do so.

Road Traffic Act 1988 Section 23 wrote:

23 Restriction of carriage of persons on motor cycles.

(1)Not more than one person in addition to the driver may be carried on a motor bicycle.

(2)No person in addition to the driver may be carried on a motor bicycle otherwise than sitting astride the motor cycle and on a proper seat securely fixed to the motor cycle behind the driver’s seat.

Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 section 102 wrote:
102. If any person in addition to the driver is carried astride a two-wheeled motor cycle on a road (whether a sidecar is attached to it or not) suitable supports or rests for the feet shall be available on the motor cycle for that person.

Nothing about facing forwards, nothing about actually using the footpegs - although they must be present and "suitable".

Unless quite recently changed there was no requirement to be facing in the direction of travel.

All the best

Astride on a proper seat, that's all that it requires.

The "should" part implying it isn't actually law.

I'm surprised about the "proper seat" bit, I don't recall there being any requirement for a pilion seat. Footpegs yes, seat no.

I don't have a "proper seat" on my Enfield, just a wooden shelf but I still take pillions on occasion.

Right! It's symantics; MUST be 'Astride' and 'Should' face forwards.

I've compounded tow snippets wrongly; I KNEW riding 'Side-Saddle' had been made illegal; & presumed it was a 'must' face forward....

There was a bike in NMCM; cant remember what it was; 1920/30's thing, with a padded arm chair at 45 Degrees on the pillion & running board under, described as a 'Lady' seat so Edwardian women could ride side-saddle in thier long skirts!

Sorry, no that's just a random side saddle pic from google img.
Couldn't find pic of one in NMCM...
But 'Lady-Seat' in GI brought up a close up of George Clooney's face, and a gimp suit!
