This is like then george mallory allegedly was the first man to the summit of everest in 1924. He could never be credited with climbing it and he didn't return. Similarly i don't think you can claim to have got your knee down unless you then got it back up again of your own accord Laughing

Oil is shit but you've discovered a truth, oil is at it's worse at the end of summer where it's had months to build up on the roads without being properly washed off. Rain at the end of summer tends to bring it to the surface making finding a patch more likely.

If crashing counts as getting your knee down, then I got my knee down on a Honda Vision AND a GS 125.... Wink

EDIT: And my NSR, but that was more a head down...

If in doubt ride in the wheel tracks of cars, the oil is less likely to end up there and will get cleaned up faster if it does.

I always ride off centre anyway, as cars can just drive straight over anything in the middle of the road.

I found that out a few years ago when I was following some cars in traffic, and ran over a dead fox that had obviously been splatted just a little while earlier. The smell of burning fox flesh and blood all over my downpipes was a tad unpleasant.

In about 99% of cases, i read 'i hit a patch of oil/diesel and crashed' as 'i ran out of talent'.
Reading the pages of BCF, you would think the roads are awash with oil and diesel, and strewn with gravel.

I was talking to Howling Terror today at a classic bike show. The OH was with me, again telling tales of some of the stuff him and his mates used to get up to on the bikes we were looking at "back in the day". HT observed that he was glad he only got into bikes at a more advanced age as he wasn't sure he would have survived had he been younger, and stupider, when he discovered them.

I agreed, and pointed out that after a bit on here you can just tell who the next statistic is going to be. Like who? says HT. Well that guy with the bros for a start say I, any time now he is going to post about crashing, just hope it's a minor one........

Take this as a warning. You are WAY too gung-ho about your riding, and next time you might not get up and walk away. I want to hear about your adventures riding, not the injuries you have gained. Karma

So much oil around!!

Seriously, i've been riding for like 6 months now so I'm super talented ( Razz ) and have not once yet seen a patch of oil..

I have, however, crashed and was man enough to admit I was a twat Mr. Green

Glad you and your bike is ok though.. crashing is bad enough on the ego and the whole 'did anyone see me'?? without having to push the bike home and spending hundreds to fix it. Thumbs Up Embarassed

2 of my fingers still hurt 2 months on.. Sick

Lessons learned and all that jazz Very Happy

In all fairness, you have only been riding for 6 months. I've seen loads of oil about, and "oil" type substances stand out a lot more in the winter. Also, it doesn't take much to lose grip on one wheel.

I wasn't trying to get my knee down i was riding sensible but damn that oil!

So your front wheel went over the oil and did not slide..... Your back goes over it and you fall off.... Rolling Eyes

Me thinks NO oil... Just someone being far too heavy handed in the throttle to brain interface Laughing

Back wheel sliding should not be a problem at all......

In all fairnes yes i have rode like a complete div but i know when to, im not like the 125 riders you see or the big bike riders doing 80-90 in 30 zones on the back wheel and so on.

I was doing around about 12-13mph on the corner, its a busy bus route busses every 10 mins and a fair few lorries use the hill as its near some mod grounds, It was just an unlucky rode position for me, everyone here can sit there and say i was riding like an idiot, but i don't know many that can ride like an idiot on that corner, down a hill that would shake the fuck out of any bike and kill your suspension followed by a sharp left turn on a downward incline.

Relax, you rode beyond your abilities and came off because of it. You're not the first nor the last to do so.

There is such a thing as inappropriate speed.

Whether you were doing 12mph or 120mph into the corner, you went in too fast and crashed. Therefore your speed was inappropriate. Therefore you were riding like an idiot.

Given that you clearly know the road well, that makes you an even bigger idiot.

Thumbs Up

Between a few of my mates, covering hundreds of thousands of miles I've only ever seen one crash due to diesel/oil, it was outside a petrol station and it was obvious from walking up the road that there was little traction.

It's always nice to have something to blame, but it's better to realise the actual cause and correct it in future.

I've only been riding 2 years, haven't seen much diesel or oil on the roads. You see a few patches here and there but not enough to throw you off (unless you brake heavily over them I guess) but recently there has been two huge diesel spills in cambridge, one coming out of a petrol station and goes up the road for about 600 yards. The other starts on a main road and goes over 2 roundabouts, both have been covered with what I guess is cement dust so are visible but still pretty greasy.

When I crashed my ybr I claimed it was diesel or oil, but now I just realise how slippery it is with the first heavy rain for a while. I came up to a corner on a route I did all the time, tapped the front brakes and went down. I hadn't been riding very long and didn't really know what happened, so just went with diesel on the road. I did get up and walk along where I had come off and it was pretty slippery there.
