Just odered some titanium pro bolts for my hubs, however I am having second thoughts about using them as I have spoken to a few people who say they are no good for hubs/wheels and will snap due to the brittleness of titanium. Has anyone else got titanium wheel bolts or has anyone got any differing advice?

Cheers

Dave

First I've heard of it. I would of though titanium was ideal for high stress area's.

Yeah, thats what I though, however a few bike dealers that my mates use and even hyperbolt (aparently) advised against it. I have just called pro-bolt and my local garage and both cant see any problem with it.

Hi

I would have hoped that anything sold for bike hubs would be sufficiently over specified to be able to cope with this.

Titanium is very strong. I am not sure how brittle it is (stainless steel is generally quite brittle and so unles you know what you are doing and use the right grade of SS then should not be used).

One problem that titanium can suffer from is that it gets stress point when scraped with cadmium. Most steel tools have a small cadmium content, so instant stress point when they are tightened up. This is apparently what caused quite a few engine failures with the RC30 when it was first launched (it had titanium con rods). I don't know if this would be a problem on something like the bolts you are using.

All the best

Keith

If you decide not to use them send them to me and I will make knee slides out of them. Very Happy

I have heard that the bolts can snap off when trying to remove them so you have to drill them out. The titanium we use at wotk for the planes is high geade thses will probably be low grade therfore being quite brittle

Its Grade 5 titanium, which is a similar level to aircraft stuff. The main problems with Pro-Bolts are the Alu. ones, as they are very soft and prone to breaking/snapping etc.

Kev: I have some spare titanum nuts somewhere but no spare bolts, Dont think they would be as good as knee sliders. Very Happy

Just to add to that, NEVER use the aluminium bolts in any stressed or safety critical area, certainly never on the brakes.

All the best
