How much leeway do speed cameras give? I've heard 10% +1, but I've also heard 10% +2. Say it is 10% +1, does that mean you can do an indicated 37 mph on a 30 mph road without getting caught? Say your speedo is 10% off, so you're actually going about 34mph.

I'm not planning on riding at these limits, but I ride a few mph over the limit, as most people do, and would like to feel safe if an unexpected speed camera pops up.

I think the majority is 10% and the +(?) bit depends on which county you are in.

That 10% isn't on top of your speedo being out.

Your speedo is only allowed to be out up to 10% over-reading.

So trying to use that your speedo was showing 10% less than your real speed is just admitting to another offense!

So 37 you're pretty definitely going to get done by fixed cameras etc - if there's a 'person' on the end of a speed trap there's obviously going to be a bit more of the human factor either way.

Hi

The allowance varies. Added to which whether you get a ticket or whether they come up with a speed awareness course is another question.

Also, you speedo can over read by various amounts (and that will change with tyre wear, speed, etc). The Alfa 156 we have is pretty accurate (checked against a performance GPS unit), but used to be indicating 31 at a true 30 and these days is indicating 32 (tyre wear, and different make front tyres). Think the limit a speedo can over read is 10%+8kmh, so at a true 30 you could be indicating 38mph.

Best case scenario say they allow 36mph before a ticket (ie, ticketing at 37), and your speed over reads by the max amount then you could get away with indicating 44.6mph. However worst case scenario they could book you for doing a gnats over the limit (very unlikely, but legally nothing to stop them) and your speedo is 100% accurate, getting you a ticket when indicating (say) 31mph.

All the best

Keith

Some districts are very strict, others are not. I got done in the car years ago doing 36 in a 30 when I got lost trying to travel down south. Camera was at the bottom of a steep hill too, so probably catches a few folk daily. When I finally got to my mates, he told me that the Lancashire Camera Partnership (or whatever it was/is) are strict as hell about speeding, so probably not even giving the 10%, especially in urban areas.

Personally just been NIP'd due to a 36 in a 30 zone in Hampshire...not a clue what the speedo was showing as I wasn't aware I was being watched/monitored

I only tend to take irregular glances at it when I know theres a camera watching me and theres no one ahead to dictate the pace

I also now have a high intensity LED that flashes an added distraction to alert me to the fact I should start concentrating more on the speedo than whats actually going on around me

Going to take my "once every three years only" course in the next month or so
£80 and a further car park charge and 1/2 day unpaid off work

Sorry guys n gals - if what I read was correct 1/3 of that £80 "course fee" goes towards maintaining/expanding the camera network

better that than having to declare 3 points for the next 5 years and risk loosing my licence if I get another 3 in the last few months of my restriction eh ??

Regards
Rob

Parbold Hill?
Honestly don't know mate. Was trying to follow a mates directions to Accrington (which I'd taken down wrong) and ended up in north Blackburn I think!! Remember it was next to a park tho.

+1 to human discretion, I was stopped for 42 in a 30, copper said "Well I waited till you saw me and got a good handful of front brake. then I pressed the trigger (on the hairdryer!). It wasn't worth going to a magistrates court over"

I would consider naming people like this, wouldn't want to get someone into trouble for actually being a 'good cop' in our eyes!

As fast as possible on open country roads, ALL the time. Steady through villages (no more than +5 or 10 than the limit), wind it on in the sticks. It will get me eventually...

There's some lovely TT style walls and hedges on my daily commute. Even at 80 it's cool. Even better on warm clear days when I can really wind it on, although squirrels don't like it when they're crossing the road, minding their own and I'm bearing down on them at 100+ wondering what's going to happen once I've squished them. He didn't half jump after I'd rolled it off and sat up to scrub some speed off. Bollocks to braking, I ain't gonna drop it for a squirrel...

It wasn't Parbold Hill if it was next to a park, there's nothing next to that camera except fields and trees. It's the sneakiest camera I've ever come across though, you literally have no time to slow down if you're winding on a bit and don't have local knowledge.

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=parbold+hill&hl=en&ll=53.591717,-2.757818&spn=0.00129,0.004128&t=m&z=19&vpsrc=0&layer=c&cbll=53.591688,-2.757626&panoid=qxb1DZe7hSU0h999_jBIXQ&cbp=12,292.74,,0,1.7

Check that google street view, carry on going forwards round that bend and look where the camera is, the sneaky bastards.
