hi all,

iv got a ktm in the garage that need a new big end bearing as its collapsed nothing strange about that but when i rang redline ktm for a ne wone he said they dont do a bearing on its own.

so does this mean it needs a full conrod like he said or can i just get the bearing number and go to a well know bearing shop and get one off them.

cheers all.

Get current bearing out, take to a bearing factors...explain its for your bike etc.. .should have numbers on the bearing anyway.

Did that for my RS125 main bearings and my CBR camshaft bearing.

Have a look see at www.ktmforum.co.uk and see what answers others have given.

But I would say what others have suggested.Get the crankshaft out of the cases and get the crank pin pressed out. Then ask about FAG bearings as they are far better quality than many others.A good engineering firm will be able to press the crank back together again once the new bearing is installed. If the crank can be balanced at the same time, the engine will run a lot smoother as well.

yeah all sounds good people.

so do local bike garages seperate the crank and if so im guessing they could push back together.

but balancing is gonna be more of an engineers job.

Pushing it back together requires the 'balancing' bit. You need a jig and someone that knows what they are doing. Possible your local garage may have this.

I mean 'Dynamic Balancing', where material is drilled out of the crank webs.

Plus, making sure that the crank assembly is as straight as possible.I have seen a brand new Kawasaki Z1000J crank assembly out by as much as 4 thou on the centre bearings. After a few 'adjustments' we got it better than half-of-one-thou,which made for a much smoother running engine.

replacing a like for like bearing should not require balancing. If you were to use an after-market piston or rod of different weight it might need it.

Looking at that it is obvious why you need to replace the rod, it is the outer race of the bearing with no insert. Bearing gone, rod gone!
