Looking at a cheapy that a local dealer has in.
It's a 99 (v) Aprilia Pegaso.
Mot'd until september next year.
Taxed for 2 months
16,000 miles.
Black.

Dealer is selling it on behalf of a poor chap that had a stroke so has given up riding. I don't know the chap but I do know the dealer and have done for a good ten or so years. Long enough for him not to sell me a lemon!

£900.

Worth it?

Any known faults? anything to check for?

Only Ape I've ever owned blew up on me !!!

I ve got the same bike... take it yours is carbed... Cube Version?
Mine is '98.

They are good workhorses, and the rotax 652 single is strong!
Known Issues:

Sprag clutch and it wants to boil the battery... as well as head gasket

For the sprag clutch, the original Aprilia prices are proibitive, but other bikes (KTM & BMW) will fir and cheaper.

For the latter a simple relay mod will stabilize it...

So to the dealer ask when or if the sprag clutch and head gasket was done... If not, that'll give you reasons for bartering...

By the way, the engine and the frame are very similar tho the BMW F650 Fubduro...

P.S. Paddy if you haven't had the pleasure of riding this bike... please do rather than dismiss it without even a review...

Not dismissing, just thinking even if it wasn't fantastic, its fairly low mileage for a 99, if its good nick..saving it till next year to make a nice profit for minimal work is a bonus Thumbs Up

To the OP check the Mileage... as far as i know... the speedo read Km on the outer, and miles on the inner ring...

And i think if 16000 is displayed on the speedo, they are Km not miles.

16000km= 10000miles approx! at 900 quid, i'd snap it off!

Paddy this bikes, are dual purpose bikes, at home on road, better off road... i ve ridden mine in snow last January...
As long as you keep on top of maintenance, they will have no problem, even in minus temperatures!

The engines are very strong, just look out for the waterpump seal/shaft going.

Not a hard job to fix, and you can buy the complete kit for £30.

As already said, BMW used that engine in the Funduro, then fuel injected it for the F650, and its still being used in the current g650, albiet its now made in china.

Incredibly fuel efficient, will go on forever and unlike most big singles its fairly vibe free aswell. Payoff is its not particularly exciting, but quick enough if you have a heavy throttle hand.

At that price its a no brainer for a good commuting workhorse.

Sounds like it could be a goer then. I'll swing by tomorrow and check it out. I've noted down the things to ask him about so I'm going to try and pretend I know what I'm talking about with this particular model. Thumbs Up

If only someone had a little kle500 for sale for £500 I would just go and buy that. Especially if they were close-ish to me. Shifty

You can tell of the waterpump is playing up, usually.
On the left hand side of the motor on the under side is a drain hole - If the pump seals or shaft have gone you will see coolent dripping out.

Also check the coolant level in the rad and have a quick look at the oil too.

Hope that helps
Thumbs Up

Thanks for all your advice and opinions.
I did go and view it
I did take it up the road

I did not buy it. Neutral

Looked well in black. Couple of little marks to the left hand side where I think it must have been run down a house or garage wall. Certainly nothing bad and it hasn't been dropped, or it has and the owner bought all new parts apart from the fairing itself as the rest is pretty mint.

Good running gear, actually pulled better than I was expecting if I'm honest. I think they are roughly (50) bhp? Seemed to pull better imo than the 600 transalp I had a while back. Don't think it had quite as much poke as my DR650rs though but then that was played with a bit.

No mention or paperwork of any of the above work mentioned being done.

Engine sounded ticky but it may have just been me. Took it three miles and half way back it appeared to develop a misfire. Sort of revved, lost a bit and then picked back up again.

I shrugged this off temporarily as it could be a plug.....

Got back, turned it off. Had another look round and a coffee and went to start it again.

whirr, whirr, tick, tick, clack, clack KADUNK!.

I removed the keys as deftly as I could and gave them back to my mate and politely suggested he went and had a 'quick look' over the bike when he has a chance. Shifty

Whats wrong with it? God knows without checking it out. Luckily it wasn't mine and I see on egay they are only fetching 900 ish anyway and for a couple of hundred more I can be in TDM territory so thats what I'll look for.

Anyways, just thought I would report back. Thumbs Up
