Posted: 18:27 - 27 Jun 2011 Post subject: What bikes have you had, and what was your favourite? |
 |
|
I've been sitting bored out my skull today after an interview this morning, and decided to make a wee picture of all the bikes i've owned up to now.
https://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt325/duncdmc/mahbikes.jpg
i've only been riding for a year (2 years with a year's break) but i've had a decent number of bikes.... and now the TT600 is going and i'm getting a different bike now.
I think the GPZ 'fighter was my favourite out of the lot. Probably because it was my first big bike, i spent a lot of time, money, blood, sweat and tears to get the thing the way I wanted it... and it turned out to be a fantastic and fun bike to ride....
Regret getting rid of it now
Anyway. What bikes have you owned, and which was your favourite... and why?

It's a difficult question to ask.
All of my bikes have been "budget" so to say. I've never spent more than 2150 on a bike - be it my XR125 and Fireblade.
Each has their merits, personal memories and accomplishments so it's hard to tell.
XR125 = Old Skool BCF in 2004 when I did the mayday run, and also messing about with the old Herts lot. Wheelies, stoppies, ended up in one of G/Silver/Bendy's videos doing a burnout next to Korn lol.
ZXR250 = It was a dog, it was a 250 4 stroke and made me ride like a total loonatic! It made me notorious for overtaking around the outside of a bend at pretty much my maximum speed!
ZX6R = I crashed it, virtually wrote it off because the accident happened to be my fault, I couldn't claim. Rebuilt the bike and it handled sweetly. Embarrassed sunday riders on their toys. Functional, capable and economic - bargain at £1300! I sold it 2 years later for £1200. I muscled the bike a lot and loved it for what it was, an old 600!
FireBlade = It just does everything TOO well! Downsides, it doesn't have the minor niggles or character of the previous kwaks. Tour, scratch, move houses, it's dependable.
It's difficult to say because each phase has its special moments.... Right now, it's the blade because it's stupidly good for the roads and more than enough. However, sometimes I wish I was on my 6R or 250 purely because smaller bikes require effort and are more rewarding. ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

Yamaha Cygnus 125
Yamaha DT 125 RE
Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM
If you asked me at the start of the year I would of said the DTR but really been loving the DRZ the last few months I'm sure I'll love it even more when my enduro wheels arrive It's not the best supermoto or off-road bike by any means but I reckon it's the best all-rounder. 2003 Suzuki GSF600N Bandit (£2000)
...that is all
The GPZ was great as a 1st bike after my DAS
but the Bandit is ideal for my needs at the moment ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

Six and a bit years riding, started with a Honda NSR 125RR, loved it at the time, sold it and realised it was after all just a bike and a starting point...
Next up was an old H reg Kawasaki Zephyr 550, I FUCKING LOVED THAT BIKE, getting tempted by the 750 again at the minute ( the 110 doesn't do it for me )...
Currently riding the SV1000S, does what it says on the tin, the V-Twin sounds like Thor having a wank so that was worth the money alone...
Next will be either a Zephyr 750 or a Bandit 600 as I want to be self employed as soon as and the saving on the insurance ( whilst not massive ) will help in other places, so long as I still have a bike for rallies and weekend pissing about I'll be reet... ____________________ Previous Bikes...Honda NSR 125 RR...Kawasaki Zephyr 550...Suzuki SV 1000 S...Yamaha FZ8...Current Bike...Suzuki GSX-R 750... |

Riding for 6 years now:
ZXR 750
FZR 600
Monkeybike
ZX7R
BWS YW100
TRX 850
Trophy 900
GSXR 600 L0
XJS 6 Diversion
I think that for all round smiles it was the scooter?
Many have the 'like' factor but the twist and go, city traffic and general hooning around on it bags it for me.
The TRX and ZX7R are a close second and 3rd. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

Riding for 5 years, bikes so far -
Aprilia rs125
Honda cb1
Triumph Speed 4
BMW F650gs Dakar.
To choose my favourite bike out of that lot is difficult, its between the Triumph and the BMW.
I think the beemer just wins it, not really because of the way it rides but because i can pretty much do anything on it - green laning, touring, lane hooning, maybe even a (relaxed ) track day. |

CBA listing, but the oustanding one for me has to be my first 250 "Elsie", a revelation after my 125, felt like a proper bike.
All my mates ended up with one, we gave those strokers some serious abuse. Looking back now, considering the tyres that were available, and the suspension that came with the bikes, I don't know how we survived relatively unscathed!
Did the IOM on them as well, good times! ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

Honorable mentions go to my GSXR750L, which is probably the "best" bike I've ever owned. My current 750M is good but it's not in the same league as my old "L", and I can't be arsed doing the mods on a high mileage bike. My favourite bike is (was) my aircooled 2T twin Yamaha RD350B. Nice combination of lunacy / practicality and nothing is easier to work on. My current take on the concept, my YR5 - is erring on the edge of fucking useless. Great fun on twisty back roads and for pulling wheelies in town, but noisy, uncomfortable, only works properly when accelerating, disgustingly uneconomical. As for the other bikes I've owned, don't regret buying any of them (barring the Bandit 400), but I wouldn't have another. Except the Suzuki X5, because I'm perverted. ____________________ 18:54:48 Rob Fzs: jews don't give away stuff for free

Ask me next week and i'll give a different answer.
1983 Honda XL125
Pro-link suspension
6 speed box
It's a youngsters field bike yet it hauled me about over hill and dale, dual carriageways, woods and maybe disused quarries.
Fav bike is all well and good.
What about the bikes you didn't like? ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

2011
May'11 to ??? - Suzuki Hayabusa 1999/T reg
May'11 to Jun'11 - Yamaha Vmax 1996/P reg Black, Stage 7 etc
The Hayabusa does everything I need. Commuting, touring and zipping about at the weekend Somehow I've got 3 of these now!
The Speed Triple was sexy and clinical, but amazing. I'd have kept it but ...I don't know why I sold it. I could get another!
The YZF750R was like a mini busa.. very light and fast. Very cool bike shame most are in bad condition.
The Mille... erm powerful, fast and nimble, but unreliable battery/electrics. Didn't have it long enough...
The Honda BROS 650... loved that bike. Ultra reliable and cool, but not fast for 650 and seeing them now... it's a tiny machine...
GT550, oddly a very good commuter, but heavy, fast enough for commuting ..basic shafty transport.
Baghira, Hmmm slow compared to the Triple, but so much fun around town. PITA on the bypass or motorway. Wish I'd kept mine. Looking for another or even a Mastiff....
RT125, fun and sexy, but ultimately too small...
Bandit 600, sprockets/gearing changed... it would go everywhere at a ton, a bike... nothing special, sounded good, it went everywhere at a ton! I thought it was going to explode but it didn't <grin>. Good commuter tool.
I'd like to try the new bus. I'm very comfortable on the bus.. BUT I'm looking out for another Baghira ____________________ **** Don't ride faster than your angel can fly Get this Free Space

List in sig below.
Best bike must be the Z1000. One word for it - insane. Relatively speaking, extremely quick, extremely agile, stunning looks, extreme grin factor. The downsides were it's appetite for back tyres and the buzz through the pegs and bars limit its range for me.
Responsibilities made me question the wisdom of owning something that quick, as I admit I don't have the restraint or experience to keep myself within my capabilities on one. I've got a young family, drive 40,000 miles a year for work so cant unduly risk my life or licence.
I'd certainly consider a Z750 in the future. ____________________ '82 C50, '81 CB100, '84 GS125, '95 NTV650, '00 Bandit 600, '06 SV650, '56 Z1000, '89 NTV600
