Right my KLR is still kicking ass but i am thinking its under powered as hell.
Right spec is , 550cc, SINGLe, 4 valve twin overhead cam and its about 34BHP?????
XR650, SINGLe, 4 valve twin overhead cam and its about 62BHP?????
i am hopefully getting a 650cc barrel piston for it that i think will fit but thats still not going to double the power.
So the question is what the difference between these engines and how can i make my make as much power

Yeah it's definitely underpowered, the SRX400 (which i was looking at for a while before i got my bandit) is 33bhp out of the factory, so you must be able to boost yours up to the 40's at least. ____________________ Chase my Witch up, Catch my Snitch up.

with much money spend on the head, with gasflowing, and possibly bigger valves, then you'd make good power gains. A higher CR piston would give more power, and also if you can change the cams, then youd have another 10-15bhp straight away. with big single tuning, none of the small mods on their own make a huge difference, but add everything up together and you start to get good power improvement at a price. if you can change to a set of big bore header pipes, before the silencer, this often helps a single breathe better at the top end, and for maximum power and hassle probably, many of the supermoto racers all fit big flatslide carbs, but its probably no worth the expense or hassle for a road bike. try a K&N and a jet kit though instead. |

I did write a long post on this thread, then BCF died and ate the post .
Basically: it's unlikely to be worth the money or effort, by the time you've got 10 or 20hp more, you could probably have just bought a new bike.
It's an older design of engine with a lot of little bits on it that aren't designed to be quite as good as the newer ones. The klr etc were always a bit more street orientated, I know mine was way to heavy for off road, so weren't designed with the intention of being a competitive bike. It should carry on trundling around ofr a lot longer though .
I was looking at what I could do to the dr, but in the end, especially as it's aircooled, it seems best to just enjoy it for what it is. (Though the cheap halford oil I chucked in seems to have zapped some of it's 'go', anyone know where I can get cheap r4 in bulk? ). |
