I cleaned my chain today of all the grease and muck that had gathered on it. Tomorrow I will oil it however I'm a bit concerned about that oil dripping onto my wheel. I wouldn't usually be that bothered, and just take it steady for a while, but right after I oil it, I want to go to the EU protest ride with a pillion. Obviously safety is paramount I'm wondering whether it would be worth a 15-20 minute ride before hand to let all the oil splash off before I take a pillion.

So how many miles would you ride until you consider it safe?

Once you've oiled your chain wipe off the excess with a rag.

There really shouldn't be nearly enough flinging off onto your tyre for you to worry about it.

If you're getting splatter you're over oiling it.

Wipe off excess with a rag. If you're worried about oil on the tyre then wipe it down with some sand or something.

I had a scot oiler set way too high recently and there were oil splashes on the tyre edge. Turned it down, as long as you don't do any heroics then you'll barely notice.

Oil splashing onto the tyre from your chain is just god's way of telling you to take left handers carefully.

Depending how badly the tyre is covered, I would just give the tyre a wipe with warm soapy water and then take it easy for the first couple of miles. until they warm up.
