im wanting to do my bike test so. but as im only 17 ill have to the restricted test and get a bike limited to 33bhp. so what are bikes like restricted? would it be better getting a 250cc that is made for that. or get something bigger and restrict it? if so, what cc?

Thread is done to death, depends on the situation, a bike disgned for 33bhp would probably be a better choice, but not always, I bought my XJ600 for £200, restricted it for £200, insured it for 300 and was on the road for under a grand, and de-restricted it after, it would still do a ton restricted and would do 90 2'up no problem. at the end of the day have a look around and see whats available, if you find an unmolested 250cc going for cheap(and they'r normally molested by 17 years old who've just done there A2), i'd go for it, if not i'd go for a 4 or 600 and restrict it. (all my opinion ofcourse)

Go for something with 60-70hp I reckon.
This will provide a noticeable difference when you take the restriction out (the 500cc commuters you hardly notice), yet still have fairly short gearing.
If you end up going for a bike with 100hp or more, it's likely the gearing will be pretty tall and I'm convinced this is why they tend to not feel great - a stock 33hp is generally geared for 100mph or less. You have the same power, but gearing to go up to 160mph, so gears will be more spread out an thus power less useful.

SV650 is standard suggestion; can be got cheaply and perform acceptably.

I have a restricted SV650 and I LOVE it! Yesterday I got a new top speed of (an indicated) 109 mph on a slightly down hill road. The acceleration is even better. I'm glad I bought a 650 and restricted it rather than an already 33 bhp 125cc or 250cc. I'd feel more of a kid on the road among other bikers because of the bikes physical size if I bought something 400cc or less, but on the SV by looking at it you'd never know it was restricted.

I have to agree - I bought a CBR600F in 2003 and restricted it - 2yrs later off came the restrictor kit and I was rewarded with a full power CBR..... A lot of fun and saved the expense & hassle of changing bikes.

Had a restricted sv up to last week, was fantastic, would do a good 95 on the flat, got 103 downhill. Plenty of acceleration. However after 4 months ive gotten curious and the restrictors fell out (: Massive difference, really good fun!

I bought a cb500s when I got made redundant.

Didn't want to spend a lot of cash and I wanted something that would do a long commute. Just spent 3 months doing Glasgow - Edinburgh every day on a contract job.

It's got the restrictors in and it's quick enough for commuting. Haven't pushed it over 90 tho.

Got anything from 64-75mpg depending on traffic.

A 5hit load of trouble you could do without.

Think ban, which would have you re-take (re-spend) for another bike licence; and insurance would rocket too. Not worth it.

A few on here have been done for it; not sure if any of those done actually were tested; think all got convicted because they told the police themselves.
However; I believe someone might have seen a fabled dyno van.
There is some question about the ramifications of these (say your bike blew up while on it).

I think it's 6 points "not in accordance with licence", which would see you needing to redo your test if you don't already have a full licence for two years (ie car licence). Not sure people have got a ban for it.
