I brought my bike to get an ACF-50 treatment today. The last couple of years, I've done it myself, badly, so I brought it to a professional this time via allyearbiker.co.uk. Poor quality phone pics below, but you get the idea. The guy did a deep clean and then used a vaporiser to get the ACF into every nook and cranny. He recommended that I just hose it off now and again through the winter or use a mild car shampoo.

The bike came out like new, and then I rode it home in the rain...

What else are BCFers doing to prepare for the winter?

Blimey, good job. I usually ACF-50 it myself. At the moment my bike looks about 15 years old because of all the crap on it.
I just checked that site, if there was one more local to me I'd definitely have it done. Alas, not.

I took it to a tiny motorcycle shop near High Wycombe, where they were doing this out in the parking lot. One of the roving "event" treatments.

A couple of the people getting it done had come from south London, while I was coming from the north west (near Ruislip), so it wasn't too bad of a trip. About 30 minutes. The hard part was finding this shop, a micro Harley dealer in the back of an industrial estate. I think it was called Motorshack or something like that? Lots and lots of Harleys too look and laugh at. The treatment took a couple of hours, though, so some of the Harleys were growing on me. Are they contagious?

There are a couple of decent bike shops in the Southend area, but I doubt they have anywhere for the cleaning to take place - would be a good little PR exercise if one of them could host one though.

That's just the Old Glory in your blood doing the talking. If this were a 50s movie, someone would slap your face to bring you to your senses.

The rates are on the web site -- a little less than £60. Yeah, I know, but it was worth a punt to try it once. He did an excellent job, though, so I might make this an annual expense.

How much did he use on the bike? I would be interested to know as I never know how much to apply!

A *very* small amount. The first time I tried this on my CBF125, I sprayed it on. Big mistake. That's way too much. The second year, I sprayed some on a cloth and wiped the bike (the one in the pics). That was better, but you are limited to where you can reach easily. He used even less and sprayed it on with a compressor/vaporiser thing.

That does look really good. Not sure if I could bring myself to part with almost £60 for what is essentially a thorough clean though. Certainly not for a CB500 at least.

Interesting, cheers.

I agree the rate is a bit high, but I think it was worth it. It's not just a thorough clean. It got a thin and very even layer of ACF-50 on everything but the brakes. I'll see how the bike does this winter before deciding whether to do it again next year.

One of the other people having it done with me was on a CB500 (the 'F' version). There were two VStroms and a Pan European getting done, as well. The CB500 was, like me, getting it done for the first time, while the others were repeat customers.

9am this morning

New paint brushes , and some old tooth ones , and Gunk to degrease the YBR.
Then.
Washed it with the normal shampoo stuff .
Let it dry out in the sunshine and breeze for a few hours.

Then the ACF50 came out. More brushes and rags.
Bike is now well sorted.
Few hours spent.
But worth it. I have never paid anyone to do that type of thing to any vehicle.
Just the way iam tho.

Doused mine last weekend. Did it myself, whilst swapping downpipes. Figured it was a good time to give the engine a good clean whilst I had better access to it.

Interesting, the use of vapourisor and not much acf50. I pretty much emptied a whole tin on the bike so it was dripping. This was fine until the drips dried on the drive paving slabs and gave me a super slippery patch I've since had to scrub down, lest I park up, lose my footing and drop the bike...

60 squids isn't a lot of money for a deep clean,

I really think people have got to work out what labour rates are nowadays.

I'm well aware of labour rates.

Just find it hard to believe that folk are that lazy ( or so busy ). That they cannot spend a few hours on their steed.
I was brought up to look after your bike. Don't let anyone touch it son , sort of thing.
Within reason obviously with repairs.
It goes a long way to getting to know your steed.
Maybe notice things.

I don't know why, but i just wouldn't trust someone else to clean my bike, if I paid and then noticed a new mark or scratch I would be very overly annoyed. Laughing

Plus I quite enjoy cleaning my bike and doing a decent job, and I agree that it allows you to check things at the same time.

Do they clean the chain and sprocket, and if so do they lube the chain too afterwards?

There's a guy near me that does this and I'm tempted. Seems viable, looking at Walloper's figures, paying someone who's obsessive compulsive enough to want to make it spotless, £10/hr doesn't seem too bad.

Sigh. As usual, I walk away for half a day and everyone's misunderstanding the thread.

1. I clean my own bike. I like cleaning my bike. I do a good job and you notice things like loose nuts or whatever. I clean my bike usually about once a month. It comes out spotless and new-looking, and I bet way better than most of you.
2. I have applied ACF-50 to my bikes for two winters. I don't really know what I'm doing or whether I'm apply too much or two little, or to the wrong places.
3. I paid this guy an amount that made me gulp because of his expertise, experience and equipment to apply ACF-50 correctly. I would have paid him the same amount, but grumbled a bit more, if I were required to clean my own bike beforehand.

Now, this being BCF, point 1 will kick off an argument between the people who claim never to wash their bikes and those challenging me to a duel because I insulted their washing skills. Point 2 will draw out people who claim to be experts on applying ACF-50 because they know a guy who knows a guy, and besides they read how to apply it on BCF. Point 3 will draw the usual about how you should do all of the work on your bike, using leftover parts from WWII tanks or forged yourself from raw iron ore.

But at least I made my own point clearer, I hope.

No, this guy left the chain and rear sprocket, but I read the same warning you did about how they sometimes degrease the chain during the cleaning process. I brought some lube along, just in case, but I didn't need it.
