Posted: 11:20 - 27 Sep 2011 Post subject: Hi folks - Mod 2 on Thursday, any tips? |
 |
|
Hi all, after failing my mod 1 twice, I finally passed it yesterday now I've got my Mod 2 on 29th at 8:20am in Macclesfield
Any tips on how to get through this? I've not had any lessons, but I've been riding my 125 for just over 2 years and I've had a driving license for almost 20 (hell, I'm old!)
I messed up my Mod 1s on the U-turn (just in the first one and badly enough that the examiner stopped the test after my controlled stop, I'd lost it that badly!) and with nerves, so any help with the Mod 2 would be very useful.
Thanks
Andy |

Hi there Andy,
I personally found teh MOD 2 far less nerve wrecking than the MOD 1. Try and enjoy the ride but remember Ob's, Ob's, Ob's and more Ob's. I personally over exaggerated turning my head to check mirrors, especially checking sides when sat at red lights - just to make sure that the examiner can see you're doing your checks. I'm sure others will give you more tips too, so watch this space! Good luck and let us know how you get on! ____________________ Previous Ride's - '01 Aprilia SR125 (Sold) '08 HONDA CBF600n (Sold) '96 CB500 (Sold) '01 FZS 1000 (Sold) '06 CB1300SA (Sold) '07 CB600F Hornet (Sold) - '93 Suzuki Savage LS400 (Sold) '98 Honda VTR1000 Firestorm (Sold) '05 CB600F Hornet (Sold) '01 FZS1000 Fazer (Sold) 2016 Harley Davidson Street Bob SE (Sold) '02 Kawasaki ZX9R (Sold) '98 CB600F Hornet (Sold) '04 Suzuki Bandit 1200s (Sold) '13 Yamaha FZ1-N |

Try and ignore the examiner's bike. At times he might be right up your tailpipe. Keep focussing on the road head.
Don't worry about not following directions, or getting lost. How you ride is more important than where you ride.
Causing another road user to take avoiding action is an instant fail, so really watch your pulling away and entry into junctions and roundabouts.
Other than that, just try to enjoy it. Treat it as any other bike ride and you'll be golden. The pass rate even for A2 tests (i.e. potentially untrained) is still over 60%, so chances are you'll pass first time. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Hopefully you've learnt the procedures for starting/stopping/turning and know your highway code...otherwise you're crap.
Pretty sure you can still download the testroutes..Anyways they often mix n match the routes in Macc due to the bloody roadworks.
Don't dawdle thinking 26mph is helping.
Do 30 if you can(Appropriate etc)...same if they take you on the Silk road..Soon as you enter that NSL mirrorcheck and pin it.
If they take you up the Leek road be prepared for those twisty lanes up there. Weather is good so nae too bad.

I did my training/ practice test in Macc, but some of the major points the instructor said to watch out for were:
As HT said NSL on the Silk Road, but not before the signs. Pretty obvious but also could be quite easy to creep over in the middle of a test when you're stressed out I suppose.
Test centre is on a one way road, and there are always people pulling out/ flying along it without watching for people coming out of the centre.
And err, this junction is a favourite apparently https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ll=53.288417,-2.120479&spn=0.005182,0.013937&t=h&z=17&vpsrc=6&layer=c&cbll=53.288373,-2.120455&panoid=iwj0JbZOvHJ-OOubHU2SVw&cbp=12,4.85,,0,9.6
Another point my instructor made: knock your mirrors out a tad further than usual, so you're forced to move your head to check them. Can't forget to exaggerate them then. |

Take the A537
Passed my M2 in August of this year, after failing it previously a few weeks before.
Just keep calm, I found myself getting a bit nervy my first go with the examiner watching my every move. And messed up on my lane positioning and my hill start was farcical.
But was told to enjoy the ride and felt a lot more confident second go, the nerves disappeared and I passed
Exaggerate your checks! Keep calm! Enjoy it! And best of luck! |

Well, I passed with only 5 minors ; signals timing, distance following and appropriate speed (going too slow in a NSL, I missed the sign and thought it was a 30).
Thought I'd failed though, twice. Had to go past a parked car, and just as I was getting past it, there was a car coming the other way that I hadn't seen. Then, I was going past a school and there were loads of parked cars, going past a line of parked cars on my side, I held up the traffic coming the other way. Relatively minor, but I thought I'd had it. Kept on riding though and was really pleased that I'd passed.
The advice I was given here (treat the examiner like a sat nav, enjoy the ride and do loads of observations) was spot on! Thanks guys

Excellent work. Got a bike in mind yet? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Thanks folks. The advice I got on the forums really helped too.
Rog, not yet. I can't afford a big bike yet. I'm planning (yeah, right) on keeping my Intruder going until my A2 becomes a full license and then I should be able to afford a Bonnie, I hope.
