Had a weird ride last night, totally surreal I guess.
Took bike from work straight out to enjoy weather, really enjoying myself, stopped of at a mates to see if he was in and wanted to come out, but he wasn't in, so I took the long way home, down a rode I have ridden one way millions of time, but not so much the other way, as I joined the road it had the Think Bike! sign with 3 fatalities since 2008, and it just hit me (not the sign, that would be hilarious) but it instantly just completely knocked all my confidence.

I rode that same road last year, with 2 mates, on as we were on it two of those fatalities occurred, and I just couldn't get it out of my head, hard on the brakes into corners and just missing all the turns, and almost hitting kerbs, constant target fixation, up until I got to this layby where the one fatality had occured, and it happened 20 minutes before we got to the police road block, and for some reason I just couldn't ride any further without stopping, almost like someone forced me to stop.

So I stopped, rolled a ciggie and just stood by the roadside next to the flowers that were there for the biker who went down last year, I didn't know the guy, never met him, didn't see what had happened at the time, but just felt something that told me to stop and I don't know, pay respects I suppose, it really did make me stop and think, was weird as fuck, and I was them compelled to do a small burnout for the rider.

As I rode off, left hand up with a wave and it just lifted, I was back on form, still taking it easy as my mind was wandering about what had just gone on.

I just don't get it, I am not spiritual in anyway, just felt like that day I shared something with this rider, I have been down that road this year going other way and didn't feel the need to stop.

Just can't explain it at all.

TL;DR I know, but it has been bugging me all night.

I think you were realising your mortality, but unfortunately you have to learn where others have ultimately lost.

Most of us know the risks on a bike, but when you experience things first hand they can still affect you.

But for you, it was possibly a realisation that when out riding on that road (or any road for that matter) you may be experiencing the last few minutes of your life.

That is a very scary prospect, and knowing that another rider had experienced this, using the same transport, riding the same road makes you realise it could quite easily be you.

Ride safe.
