A quick question following on from:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=227389&highlight=tax+post+office+address

TLDR - Pepperami wanted to tax a bike with his mates name on the V5, his name on the insurance certificate but couldn't because the post office are an outdated relic that pulled a "computer says no" on him.

My situation:

I own a car, V5 in my name etc etc, girlfriend insures it as main driver, I am a named driver as I rarely use it. Our address on the insurance cert, my mother's address on the V5 (for various reasons, one of which is not insurance fraud).

Car has MOT, Insurance certificate (her main driver, me named driver) and I want a tax disc... Am I going to have issues getting one at the post office?

I would try to get it online if poss to avoid issues at PO as it's taxed, insured and MOT'd so should go through. Failing that give it a go at the PO and see what happens.

Fill out the New Keepers slip with the name and address details, matching those on the insurance certificate.

Quick and dirty and you'll no doubt have to request a new V5C in the future if you choose to sell the vehicle.

The reason I haven't done it online is because it will get delivered to my old dear's who A - is miles away, B - has a pair of arsehole jack russells that tear the post to shreds and C - the tax runs out on saturday Surprised .

I tax my bike and normally the car online though, avoiding human interaction is a good thing.

I do like the new keeper supplement idea though...

To change address on the V5, do you need to include the new keeper supplement when you send it in?

DirectGov website says you need to send in the whole thing, for an address change.

A replacement due to loss or theft is £25!

Cant tax with new keeper slip anymore... I think.

You can just change the address on the V5 yes, then send it back. No charge for it. Just send it recorded. DVLA do have a habit of being complete badgers arseholes when it comes to post Rolling Eyes

you can tax it once using the green slip, without having to change the keeper name, next time though you'll need the log book in the name of the insured.

From directgov.

Quote:
The New Keeper Supplement can only be used for taxing at the Post Office for two months from the date you bought your vehicle. However, the DVLA Local Office will accept it for taxing up to thirteen months from your purchase date. If it’s out of date, you’ll need to apply for a Registration Certificate in your name

I only see B as a problem here - the 1st is covered by the magic of post, the last by the fact you get some grace from the coppers for non display if you tax prior to the end of the month.

The vehicle will show as taxed on the database, so you shoul dbe fine.

Go online, taxing at Post Offices is just a total PITA.

Oh, lordy, lordy, Ah is a po' sinnah, take me away and lock me up.

What offence do you imagine you'd be charged with if caught? Attempting to Give Money to the Government by Deception?

I had a 'discussion' with the old dear in a post office when I wanted to tax my bike. My first name on the insurance, and my middle name (the one I use) on the V5. She wanted to take the V5 from me and send it away. I told her to sod off. I took the form to another post office and got it done with no problems.

All the tax form says is that insurance has to be valid on the vehicle - it doesn't say the names have to be the same, but some post office modo's can't comprehend this.

Probably comes under fraudulent declaration, up to £5000 fine.

I was just pointing out to St3v3 that it was fraud, don't give a toss if it gets done or not.

It must just be select POs that are full of arseholes, my local one didn't give care, she clearly read all the documents quite fully and took my £££s without question.

Thanks for the advice all - have some Karma .
