Be able to come and have a look at my TL engine with me on Saturday?

It is in pieces in Aldershot, and the shop reckons it needs all the gears replacing. I want to have a look, and be sure it actually needs doing before I try and find a decent second hand engine for it (which are like rocking horse shit Sad ) or shelling out for it to be fixing up (over £1k in parts along Crying or Very sad )

Right now, I'm off to go and cry in the corner. Sad

Oh yeah, does anyone know the effects of putting a cam chain tensioner in "the wrong way round" is? Sad

Going with if the gears look ok??? then there ok?? thats the only thing i have ever checked so i cant really help.

Good luck m8 Sad ( you don't have a lot of luck with engines)

didn't read the cam chain bit, na should be alight might not push exacltly the right spot on the guide but wouldn't be miles out, as they fairly symmetrical??

Also, Scoob and Gav agree that it's very unlikely for all 6 gears to be fucked and need replacing. Whats other peoples views/ experience/ reckoning on this? The bike was running fine in 2nd-6th gear. Neutral

Not mechanically minded as you may well know but having talked to a fellow biker while reading your post he says that unless they are taking you for a ride there is no way all 6 gears are broken.

Do as you say and take someone technical, don't tell them to do it. Di he say it broke all 6 gears or you can't just replace the one gear, they all need to be done? I suspect they see a young person with an obviously large wallet and are trying it on.

unless you've been pouring sand in your gearbox then I can't see how all the gears are damaged.

Hi

Not that likely that all the gear are shagged. However long wheelies through the gears might cause some damage (depending on where the oil pump pick up is), but that would also stand a good chance of doing more damage to the big ends, etc.

However how has 1st gear failed? Has it just worn excessively or have some teeth come off? It the teeth have come off then the fragments floating round could have damaged the other gears. If so it might be worthwhile to check the oil pump while the engine is in pieces.

All the best

Keith

www.okas.co.uk/stuff/gears/

Thats what they look like. You can see how first gear has the dogs on it rounded, and it won't sit in correctly.

The other gears are also rounding at the tops, although photos ain't that great Sad .

What are peoples mechanical views on these?

The pictures are of too bad quality to see what state the gears are in. They do look a bit worn though.

All I can tell from that is that the selector in the first pic looks worryingly worn on one side.

By the looks of it that has been up and down the box without the clutch, probably during wheelies and doubless without any care.

The actual teeth themselves are all okay. It is just the dogs and selector bits which are fucked. Hence why it was going okay, but was trying to slip/ jump out of gear. Sad

The selector rods look like they've been heated up looking at the colouring on the ends. Definately something a miss there. Get another gearbox from a breakers is my advice.
