Some old guy drove into the 840 on the weekend leaving it like this

Door has had it, rear quarter has had it, just been down to BMW to get a quote for new panels, not as bad as I thought, I can buy one brand new headlight for the same price as the door and rear wing (£1680)

Finally managed to sort out the insurance company as no one had contacted us, rang them today.

They have already given the go ahead for repairs (car hasn't been assessed though) which means I now have to trawl every approved body shop on their list in the area to see which one is decent, and some how explain to them that they wont colour match it so will need to do the whole car, as it is 14 year red with lacquer, it is a physical impossibility to match, and I don't want a two tone 8 as that is what it will look like in a year or so when the paint fully hardens.

Spoke to insurance company at 3 oclock this avro, and they are delivering from what I gather a nice new 5 series F10, which oddly was the same car that drove into the 8 Laughing

Before (and 8 series whoring)

Great cars, always had a soft spot for them - especially the Alpina B12 version.

The depreciation on them is terrible, and they're rapidly descending into shed territory, which makes me glad - not sure I'd like the fuel bills at today's prices though, especially as my right foot seems to be mostly made of lead.

Thumbs Up

B12s aren't exactly easy to come by, some guy in Germany I think has about 3 or 4 of them the lucky git.

Depreciation isn't actually terrible, when we started looking for one 10 years ago they were at about 15-30k ish, ours hasn't depreciated, and they are actually going up in value so now is the time to buy an 8er as they are have held steady for the past 2 years or so, but are starting to rise, a decent 840 is now fetching £6k where as 2 years ago it would have been £4k.

Fuel bills, at todays prices, £118 to fill it up and will return 24mpg around town and 30+ on a steady run, even spanking it will return reasonable MPG.

Biggest downfall is maintenance, you can buy a £2k 850CI on PH right now, but that is close to the same price as yearly running costs at a minimum, the biggest problem is part prices, it doesn't really share that many parts with other BMW's so getting hold of parts can be an issue, and they can cost, but they aren't silly, I actually find BMW reasonable when it comes to part prices, better than the Japs Thumbs Up

As much as I love the V12, and I really do, the 840 is the better car, not as heavy on the noise and if anything goes wrong with the rear cylinders then you aren't looking at a minimum £1000 just to even get at them and look at them, and the 850 can be notoriously unreliable if not constantly maintained, and if the head gaskets go, well put it this way, we had some weeping on both heads, and an oil leak, so we had the gaskets done and the engine mostly stripped down and fully rebuilt, and for the V8 that cost around £4k, the total bill was close to £6k as we had the gearbox out and a few seals done and pressure tested.

Mechanically they aren't cheap to keep running, but they make up for it with their looks and their pop up headlights, and that they are just that brilliant, if I had the cash I would have an example of every 8 ever produced, bar an 830i as that would be nigh on impossible, and the cabrio they never made Crying or Very sad

I was referring to their new price vs their used price, they were around £60K new IIRC.

Sod the cabrio, I'd love to see the M-8 which (supposedly) never made it past the prototype stage.

Not so keen on the DTM style mirrors, they've just become too Barry nowadays (as have M3 style mirrors).

Sorry you've had your car pranged, but good luck with persuading your insurance company to authorise a full respray, they really don't like 'betterment' claims.

Shouldn't be any problem painting your car, we did some edge to edge stuff on my business partner's Hellrot '96 840Ci about five years ago; it matched then and it still matched, three years later.

£6k bill is nasty Shocked You can find an entire car for less than that now Surprised

How are your rear jacking points holding up? They're prone to storing water and rotting quite badly.

Started around £65k and went up to about £85k easiest way to look at it is, they were a £70k car, and to be fair the depreciation is only £4,500 ish a year up till now, they aren't going much lower now and are rising as well.

Totally agree with the dreadful DTM mirrors the Evo style mirrors are much nicer like this lovely Estoril Blue 8er
https://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll275/bern3ch/Santa%20Pod%2020-09-09/166.jpg

Although I was always under the impression that the M8 was put into their vault hidden away never to be talked of ever again and to be dismantled, kind of odd seeing a picture of it in their museum as it is supposed to be in bits, it was never even road legal, notice anything missing from the car? Shame as Mclaren reckons they could have got around 1000bhp from the S70 V12, and coupled it to the already lightweight body of the M8, which was cobbled together with bits left over etc.

Yeah, but the car was near perfect, essentially a new car, and then it would be the case of, if I bought another 8, am I going to have to do it to that one.

Structurally the car is sound, it has been well looked after.

Car is going off for assessment tomorrow, got to take it down to the garage who it has been handed to, and I know they are quite good as I had to deliver a DB6 there once....*One day I may forgive my brother for taking me to the wrong garage meaning I didn't actually get to drive and deliver said Aston, wanker*

Although some bad news may be arising from this, I took it for a drive earlier and the steering is now really heavy, the steering wheel is slightly off centre and it clonks going over bumps, as when it got hit it was shoved across the road sideways so I think something could be bent Sad

Track rod/track rod end/control arm balljoint I suspect.

On most cars quite cheap, on yours you might need to remortgage your wife Thumbs Down .

Good luck getting it sorted

BMW have a weird front end, about 3 different arms and the cheapest is £120 IIRC the lower arm itself is ally and I think that is in the region of £300 Sick

Will love to see the total cost to fix this, but I think the steering box has taken a knock as that is where the clunk is coming from, wondering if the knuckle has bent slightly.
