Hey all. Just got a phone call from the vet. My dog Poppy (a 14month lab/lurcher cross bitch) is in today to be spayed. During the operation she developed heart problems and she stopped breathing. She's ok now, and is recovering, we get to pick her up at 16:30.

Is this likely to be a sign of an underlying condition, is it something we need to worry about? I assume it's just an adverse complication of anaesthetic, but I'm not a vet.

Any input?

Surely this would be the thing to ask the vet when you go in to pick her up?

Stinkwheel is a vet I think, or is it Sickpup? Sickpup makes more sense.

Nah Stinkwheel is lol. I will be asking the vet, but a second opinion is always good. And I may get ideas on things to ask the vet for when I get down there.

Most likely due to the anaesthetic drugs if there are no other signs of heart disease. Different dogs respond in different ways so one dog will be light on a certain dose and another dog of the same weight will be deep. It may be that she was more sensitive than average to the anaesthetic and went a bit too deep.

I find this happens more with very fit, well muscled dogs because the initial drug you give (usually propofol) to induce anaesthetic immediately redistributes to the muscle tissue on giving it so they don't go to sleep as well. You then have to use a higher dose of gas anaesthetic to keep them under and they can suddenly go deeper as the initial drug starts coming back out of the muscle tissue. You notice their breathing and heart rate decreasing, turn down the gas anaesthetic and maybe give them a few extra breaths with the bag.

A dog stopping breathing under anaesthetic isn't all that unusual and not that much of a problem as long as you're monitoring them properly because they are intubated and on oxygen, you usually just give them an odd breath until it starts again. If the heart rate slows too much, you can give them a drug to speed it up again.

They probably just let you know out of courtesy in case you see it in the notes at a future date.

I've heard that you have to be more careful when giving sight hounds anesthetic and I was advised to find a vet who knows to treat them differently. Not sure how true it is, but Stinkwheels explanation seems to correspond.

Hope your pooch is OK. My lurcher type is just getting over an op to remove an abscess.

Huge scar

You don't need to treat them differently so much as be aware that they can react differently.

Mainly that they take longer to recover than other breeds. The above explanation is the official one but my personal suspicion is that their inherant laziness plays a part.
