Hey all. Just got a phone call from the vet. My dog Poppy (a 14month lab/lurcher cross bitch) is in today to be spayed. During the operation she developed heart problems and she stopped breathing. She's ok now, and is recovering, we get to pick her up at 16:30.
Is this likely to be a sign of an underlying condition, is it something we need to worry about? I assume it's just an adverse complication of anaesthetic, but I'm not a vet.
Any input?

Most likely due to the anaesthetic drugs if there are no other signs of heart disease. Different dogs respond in different ways so one dog will be light on a certain dose and another dog of the same weight will be deep. It may be that she was more sensitive than average to the anaesthetic and went a bit too deep.
I find this happens more with very fit, well muscled dogs because the initial drug you give (usually propofol) to induce anaesthetic immediately redistributes to the muscle tissue on giving it so they don't go to sleep as well. You then have to use a higher dose of gas anaesthetic to keep them under and they can suddenly go deeper as the initial drug starts coming back out of the muscle tissue. You notice their breathing and heart rate decreasing, turn down the gas anaesthetic and maybe give them a few extra breaths with the bag.
A dog stopping breathing under anaesthetic isn't all that unusual and not that much of a problem as long as you're monitoring them properly because they are intubated and on oxygen, you usually just give them an odd breath until it starts again. If the heart rate slows too much, you can give them a drug to speed it up again.
They probably just let you know out of courtesy in case you see it in the notes at a future date. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
