 |
|
Hey Guys,
After my accident last Monday, I've decided to downsize to a mini-pit the same as Rox's, and concentrate on some smaller tracks until Rox is at a pace fast enough to run along side the bigger bikes at international circuits like Whilton Mill.
The reason I'm not sticking with my mid-size (12" wheels) is because it's like trying to maneuver a bus around the smaller tracks like Caxton, and Stretton.
So the general run down is a Honda CRF50 frame, fitted with shortened SDG Upside down forks, a Monstermoto Gull-arm swinger, 10" scooter wheels, and topped off with a hybrid 125 engine.
Pete. has been a f*cking God-send, and machined down both of my 140 barrels so I can fit them onto the 125 bottom ends, to create a fecking awesome track engine!
YX125 bottom end, Start in gear, with a 6-plate race clutch, short ratio gearbox, topped off with a YX140 barrel, piston, and big valve head.

The wheels I will be running are these Suzuki AP50 wheels, 10" wheels, wrapped in a set of Sava MC20 cut slicks.
They have been cut with a wet pattern, but work fecking well in the dry, and good for the winter riding as they warm up bloody quick.

On the front end, I am going to make up a hub for the wheel, so I can run twin discs. I've bought a pair of single-pot slide calipers form a Kwak ZX750, which look to be identical to the single pot Pit Bike calipers, only they have a left and a right side.

I'll update when I receive my frame.
The one I'm going to be running is billet.
Will be a similar size and geometry to Rox's one.

Reason I need a smaller bike, is because trying to get around a track like Caxton on my midsize, means hanging off like so:

Dont remember a great deal.
It happened at Whilton Mill international circuit.
I was following Rox round, we'd done about 3 laps, and the next thing I remember was being in hospital.
There are a few snippets which I remember between the two times, but little worth talking about. Just peoples faces, and certain things that were said.
From what I've been told. A group of bikes who ride my usual pace, had caught up with me and Rox, as I was only riding at her pace.
The leader of the group rode straight into the back of my bike, knocking me clean off. I smashed my jaw on the ground and KO'd myself.
Then the bike behind him ran me straight over.
Rox got knocked off too, along with about 3 other bikes, but nobody was really that injured.
It's put me off a little, as well as pissed me off.
If I'd of been riding alone, Id of been as fast, if not faster than the bike which took me out.
I'm also glad I was following Rox, as it'd of probably been her who was knocked off and ran over if I'd not been there.
Caxton raceway is a smaller circuit, who actually put the effort in to ensure all bikes are safety checked, and riders are catogorised.

Let me get this straight; a regular pit bike has ONE pair of the smaller pads on the left;
https://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s720x720/302397_10150319894805606_506045605_7928299_1019757400_n.jpg
And you have TWO pairs of the ones on the right
On something that weights about as much as a half eaten packet of crisps, with a wheel base I could measure with a ruler!
And slicks!
I see..................
TARMAC!
In microscopic detail, in your future!
Magifying effect of getting that close, that fast, you MIGHT even witness sub-atomic particles of McAdam!
Are you SURE about this twin disc set up? Surely that is just MORe retardation power than you can possibly exploit? Would you not get more advantage from going with the single gripper and saving unspring weight?
On a bike that light; weight saving of extra caliper would be fairly significant, and taking it of the axle best place to take it from.
Add on Ed: you have me reminiscing. Used to spanner for couple of lads running old TZ's or eLCies; 350 twin disc was a 'must have'. BUT; noticed couple of lads in class running single disc set ups.
The twin discs were, very powerful, and hauling up hard for the hair-pin at Mallory, brilliant, tail wagging tyre sqirming; BUT!
Over-Braked, easy to over cook it on the brakes, and OK, advantage is there to get past people on the turn in; BUT, and I was probably not that diplomatic in the way I put it; you don't win races going a little bit less slow than your field mates, in slow corners; you win races by going a lot faster than them in FAST corners!
Always wanted to try the single disc set up & see if it made much difference to actual lap times; because from where I was stood; always seemed that it was extra weight for no great advantage; only at the faster tracks like Silverstone where you had straights long enough to get up a real head of steam with a corner tight enough to really need to scrub it off again at the end, did they have any real merit;
On a pit bike, running on tight twisty pocket track; I would have thought similar would apply; you wouldn't have the length of straight often enough to get the speed to need to scrub it off again.
How long are the races?
Is there risk that concentration drop off and race fatigue you'll loose feel and risk front end wash from such fierce brake? ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

It's probably going to be far too much.
BUT, I've done the ground work now. I was expecting the calipers to be A LOT smaller.
Gonna see how it goes with the twin setup, will probably be FAR too much, but may as give it a go.
Weight wise, you do have a point.
Although I'm running ally wheels, fitted with tyres and innertubes.
It's not as light as it looks unfortunately.
It'll still go bloody quick, and hopefully stop very quick too.
On another note, It wont have any rear brake.
So the weight I am adding at the front, will be saved at the rear anyway.

I recon it'll just reduce moment of inertia so it'll rotate about the front wheel spindle faster
What DOES it weight, BTW?
Two of the lads in my street have been fouling my drive with a pair of £350 Chinese POS Bikes, lately.....
I was NOT impressed! Brand new bike, and no grease in the head race bearings that were slopping around; wire wheel spokes eating through the vaguely zinc coloured cheese of the hubs; floating calipers that dont float; you probably know EXACTLY what I'm talking about!
One of them had stuck one on a pair of bathroom scales, and reckoned it was 16 stone.... ie heavier than my 'ancient', full sized air-cooled DT175!.....
Hmmm......
Now THERE'S a brake set up for you! 125mm half width cable operated single leading shoe drums!
MCM in 1978 described it as 'adequete'! ! They also described the OE Block-Tread Yokahama Tyres (We joked 'in the day'; "Have a Drama on a Yokahama!") as 'quite good for block treads!
I am REALLY looking forward to riding this bike! Drum brakes, block treads and a two stroke engine that can get it up to near 90! Old Age! WTF... no fool like an old fool! And while some may say, when you ent got much life left you ought to spend it wisely.... what would be the point!
SO! We have a race; first corner; you head but the tarmack, and I'll go sailing on until impeded by something 'upright'! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

That sounds painful, damm lucky that nothing was broken
What happened to the guy who knocked you off? Hopefully kicked off the track and told not to come back?
