I know there's a few engineering sorts on here, maybe someone could give me a few pointers...

I can't work out how to solve for R6, without R6 there i could solve the reduce the resistances down to a single resistance easily.

Nope.

I discovered on Friday that my knowledge of electronic theory had disappeared due to lack of use.

I was trying to work out the value of a resistor needed to provide the voltage drop to trigger an applicator interface.

It made my poor little brain hurt.

I can sympathise there I did radio electronics in my yoof, now even wiring a plug is a task Embarassed

OP, what value are you trying to find ??
your diagram doesn't have a lot of info to work from apart from voltage & resistance

At the moment I'm trying to simplify the circuit down to one voltage source (the battery) and one resistance (all of the six resistors).

In the grand scheme of things I need to find the current flowing through R6 via a variety of theorems, but until I crack how to simplify the resistances, I don't think I'm going anywhere fast. :/

I thought batteries were staged in 1.5 volt jumps how did you get 10V?

normal batteries yes 1.5v is standard but car battery's have 6 x 2v cells
and there are other variations 1.1v from gel cell etc

It would help if you'd labeled the resistors the same in both diagrams, maybe that is confusing you a bit!

You need to read up on Thevenin's theorem to understand it.

If it helps, you can substitute the battery with a zero ohm equivalent to help calculate the resistances.

Download LTSpice from linear technology (its free) to simulate it and confirm your answers Very Happy

Ignore R1 and the battery, R2 thru R6 are an unbalanced bridge.

This link shows one method to find the resistance of that network.

You don't need a course for this, just pick up a 'beginners guide' to electronics and you'll be able to work this sort of thing out in a few hours. It's not rocket science, just basic maths (once you understand the principals). Thumbs Up

Our local college used to run night courses on things like this.
I could probably work it out if I hadn't had a few beers Wink (although it would make my head hurt too!)

There it is, unbalanced bridge!

As soon as you've said it, it suddenly clicked... Now who feels like a dumbass. Now just gotta learn how to solve them.

I've been using that allaboutcircuits.com a lot tonight, its pretty useful!

@Ariel, this excercise is part of some uni coursework (haven't put the whole circuit up, only the part I was having difficulty with), as such the voltages and resistances etc etc are pretty arbitrary.
