 |
|
Hey guys, I\'ve been considering getting a GPZ-500 for a while now, but I\'m still on my CBT and haven\'t booked in for a test or anything.. but the plan was to get a GPZ-500 once I passed my test.
Anyhow, I found one the other day a few miles away from where I live, up for sale.. it was an M reg, and they were asking for £699 ONO..
After looking on bike trader this seemed like a pretty good deal, and was just wondering whether or not it\'d be worth getting hold of, even if it means leaving it to sit around for a while before actually using it (\'cause I\'ll need to pass my test first).
Also, how should I go about making sure it\'s all ok, maybe take somebody along with me, or test ride it or something?
Not used to this sort of thing, so any advice would be very much appreciated
Cheers,
Liam |

Uh, it may be because the answers are obvious.
Yes, buy now if you have the cash and can get a good deal on an honest bike that's well regarded.
Yes, take someone with you, knowledgeable if possible, cynical at a pinch.
Yes, ride it if possible or get a trusted chum to do it (at your risk, you bend it you've bought it), or at least go for a pillion ride.
Are you looking for specific advice on what to look out for on a GPz500? I'm sure someone will provide that if you ask, but at the moment it sounds like a theoretical issue. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

First thing i would find out is whether its a 1st or 2nd generation as it changed in 1994. The 1st gens had a few problems like the stator magnets falling off and jumping out of 2nd gear under heavy braking. The 1st gens also have 16" wheels which pretty much limits you to Battlax bt45's, they are good tyres tho.

Stator magnets came off on mine at around the 30k mark... one totally trashed motor... annoyingly, I'd just had the cam chain replaced too, which is another weak point.
In use, the motor was decently usable, not in the sports 600 class obviously, but not far behind a Bandit of that era and with distinctly more power than a GS500/ER5/CB500. I didn't have any problems with the gearbox, but the 16" wheels make the handling a bit lively, nothing that can't be ridden round but it can feel a bit twitchy at times. The 17" wheel model is more stable.
Look for bodged fairing repairs too - if they topple over, the front indicators have a habit of punching a neat hole in the fairing where they are mounted. Rear wheel bearings go, too. ____________________ "Force has no place where there is need of skill" Herodotus 450BC |
