Hi guys

Where to start??
Well after days and days of trying to get the bodged belt cover off.

I finally got there through all the mess of rounded nuts etc.
Only to find the old belt shredded and snapped fins on the pully(actuator ?)

Now I can't work out how to remove said pully as it keeps on spinning?

I don't have an air gun and am out of ideas??

I don't want to spend any more money on this hunk of crap but I hope to run it a while longer!

You need to buy a variator holder tool (£13) to undo the nut. Or if it's air cooled and you can access the fan on the other side remove the fan and use the bolts holding it on and a metal rod to basically jam it in one place. The snapped fins will be from when the belt snapped ideally you should replace it but it shouldnt cause any problems.

Variator holding tools often work well for removing the variator but when it comes to putting it back on they can cause a wealth of problems. You'll certainly need a torque wrench and the specified torque from the manufacturer. If you dont torque it correctly then you could be riding along and the variator nut could come flying off with the variator behind it wrecking your crank thread. Similarly if you over-tighten the nut you can damage the thread.

What you REALLY need is an impact wrench with an adjustable torque setting. Thats what I use and ive never had a problem. Of course, these cost quite a bit of money which you might not have spare so what you need to find is an electric impact wrench (Argos used to do one for around £40 iirc). Just be careful not to over tighten it.

try machine mart, they have a pretty good range of impact wrenches, i picked up a 24v 200Nm one for a shade under £100

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cir24-24v-cordless-impact-wrench?da=1&TC=SRC-impact wrench
kinda gone up price a bit now tho

how ever if you have a power source they have a plug in one for £65, 450Nm should be more than you ever need
https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/clarke-cew1000-electric-impact-wrench?da=1&TC=SRC-electric impact wrench

also a small drop of thread lock should help to stop the variator nut coming off.

or 12v ones?

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cir13c-1-2in-impact-wrench-kit-12v

depends on the torque required however this goes up 170Nm

Hi guys

Cheers for links

am I right in thinking,if I use a impact wrench I won't need a variator tool thing?
Now for the stupid bit, won't the variator keep spinning even with impact wrench??

Cheers

It won't spin in general because if has to be able to turn over the crank as well. And the hammer force when it turns all goes into the nut, the rest of the energy is lost after that.

I have used it before on a piaggio zip scooter without problems.

Some people recommend getting some locite threadlock compound to stop it coming undone. Get the one where it can be removed afterwards! I think its the blue one, the red one is permanent.
