How long a lay off does it take to lose a considerable amount of your fitness?

Its kinda hard to state my level of fitness, but I can run a mile in a shade under 7 minutes (but I tend to run for longer at a slower pace) and bench press about 65kilos easily. I'm pretty skinny though! Embarassed

Real quick, I've had 6 weeks out of the gym due to work/illness/holidays and having gone back this week, I feel like I'm back where I was 6 months ago.

Only good thing is that when you return, it comes back quicker than it took to get there in the first place Thumbs Up

I used to be fit as a fiddle, I could bench my own bodyweight and deadlift twice that; I was a national rowing champion and county cross country champion, played a fair bit of rugby too. Then I had a very scary tachycardia a year and a half ago which put me off a bit so I pretty much gave it all up; wrong approach I know but I really can't be bothered or find the time now. Given the fact I smoke a fair bit, I can just about walk the 20 minutes or so into work at a brisk pace without getting out of puff. A sorry state of affairs given the fact I'm only 24 Embarassed

I have always found stamina to hang around for quite a while, and it always seemed pretty easy to regain. Strength on the other hand disappeared quickly and wasn't as easy to regain.

Yea; was surprised that with a year or so not/hardly going to the gym, it didn't take long to get back in to things and when I did I was starting from a reasonable level too.

My experience is just the opposite somehow.
I can do 30 pull ups any day but I can't run 400 meters. Time to quit smoking I guess Rolling Eyes

Mine goes down very quickly, takes me about a week to regain it.
