First off.

On my way into work this morning I was overtaking a van on the way to Worcester Park and didn't spot someone pulling out from a side road. I anchored on and the bike got a bit of a wiggle on. Ending up laying it into the side of the now oncoming van at about 10mph.

Damage to bike:
RHS crash bung has been pushed back and has cracked the fairing.
A couple of scrape on the exhaust and bar-end.
My brake lever seems to be both loose and tight [you can push it all the way forward but it doesn't come back too far].

Damage to me: Nada.

Will certainly be more careful with my overtakes from now on.

Sorry to hear it.

Although being more careful with your overtakes is good, also knowing when to overtake would help you more.

It was a bad idea (as you now know) overtaking when there's a junction close.

Without wishing to rub salt into the wound, that's a doubly stupid place to overtake.

Not only (as you discovered) could a vehicle pull out of the side road to your left (Dalmeny Rd), but the vehicle you were overtaking could suddenly have decided to turn right (into Colborne Way).

Hopefully it'll be a lesson learnt, and you won't repeat your mistake with (potentially) far worse consequences.

Thumbs Up

First rule of overtaking is don't do it unless you can clearly see the whole area you're going to pass through during the manoeuvre.

Rule two, don't chance it if there's a side road involved, wait a couple of seconds and go when you're somewhere safer.

Unfortunately in a fairly embrassing way you have gained some experience, mainly be wary of overtaking things that you cannot see the other side off, buses are another favorite with either cyclists or pedestrians being all too keen to dash out in front of tons of metal

personally from your reconstruction, I would have reported the pulling out van for having no wheels!

Have learnt a lesson fo' sho'. I've been so used to filtering all of the way to work [I work in the West end] that I've been treating the ride as one long overtake!
