Hello everyone,

im very new to the forums and as its a bike forum i thought id start with my major question right away. i haven't ridden much and soon im going to do my CBT but i have been looking at lots of bikes to get for when i pass and i cant make my mind up. im 6 ft and i dont like the idea of small 125 bikes because i just look stupid on them and i feel uncomfortable on them too. i know that 2 stokes go faster but 4 stroke sounds much better.. thats my opinion ofc and 4 strokes are more reliable! Very Happy i think anyway..

i had a look at the Hyosung 125 GT and the GTR bikes and i like them, what troubles me one is £2999 and the other is £3499. what is so different in performance between them?

https://www.hyosung.co.uk/detail.php?id=7

https://www.hyosung.co.uk/detail.php?id=10

i am also curious if anyone has owned these and could tell me a little about your experience's with these bikes
another question is, what are the restrictions on performance upgrades on 125 if you have a cbt, cant you put aftermarket exhaust on it and other performance upgrades ?

Thanks a bunch

As far as I'm aware there are no restrictions on performance mods on 125's on a CBT specifically, but you'd be rather hindered because both those bikes are on the learner limit already, pretty much, so any mod that actually does increase the performance any noticeable amount is going to take you over the learner limit.

Best performance increase (particularly if you have three grand to spend on a bike) is to spend a portion of that cash on passing your test, then spend the remaining cash on a 500 - 700cc bike that will leave any 125, no matter how many flashy mods it's got, miles behind in the dust, with consummate ease.

Owned a GT in non standard form, different gearing, open pipe, rejetted carb and snorkeled air box/uprated filter.

Its up for sale right now to BCF at £650, I bought it for £1895 in 2009 on an 08 plate.

They are ok, heavy, doesn't mean they are slow. They do 70ish, I had 2 people on mine down a hill and along a mile long straight GPS'd at 82mph. Speedo said 92 or 94 or something wacky Laughing

Its a great bike, especially to do your test on.

thank you all very much on your replys Very Happy

yeah i wasnt going to buy a brand new one unless i happen to win the lottery, but if im going to buy one it will be some what mint or very good condition as im not very good at hands on technical stuff with bikes.. i can replace a light bulb and oil / petrol .. thats about it really haha.

Paddy thank you for pointing this out, i had a quick look at it and if i had the know how to fix it i would possibly purchase it but as i dont i probably would steer away from it. also you live in kent and i live in the scottish borders, its quite a distance Sad

Regards to the upgrades / performace stuff, so there stock built on the power limit. so its illegal then to put an after market exhaust on it owning a cbt ? Crying or Very sad

Thanks once again

Adam

That's not quite what I said - anything taking it over 14.6bhp would make it illegal. An aftermarket exhaust will not necessarily do this (I'd be surprised if it did, but it's not like I'm an expert, or even all that knowledgeable on the subject).

It's not in my opinion the best way to spend your money, as you'll lower the value of the bike for resale, as well as cost yourself a fair packet, on a bike that you'll likely get bored of pretty quick and want to change as soon as you get a full licence.

I was of the opinion I'd be quite happy with my Varadero (similar kind of big, comfy 125cc bike) after the test, because I'd read it'd go 70 reasonably happily. What I learnt for myself was that 70mph on the flat, which it did do, doesn't mean 70mph uphill or into a headwind, which it didn't, and that it soon gets old pinning it at full throttle and hitting about 45-50mph.

They claim 14.2 bhp as stock =~ 10.59 kW. The legal limit is 11 kW.

However, that's a limit on what the bike actually generates, and the brain trust here concur that it's the power at the crank, which is impractical to measure. Dynos measure power at the rear wheel, then use voodomaths to estimate crank power.

tl;dr - the chances of you actually being prosecuted are infinitesimal. Your insurer may take offence to you fitting a "performance" exhaust, but it's on a case by case basis, and the extra power it produces will be minimal on a 125 anyway.

I had a GT 125. It was great for learning to ride a bit after the CBT. £120 a year insurance and £16 to fill the tank up that would get me around 200-220 miles!

Everything worked on mine but I only had it for about 2 months before I passed DAS.

Did a 200 mile round trip in the shitty pissing down monsoon rain and I never lost grip once on the standard "Made in China" tyres!

Overall: I found it a good bike, decent size for a tall and built guy and had enough power to pull me along at 65-70mph.

Awful to trade in against another bike though so if you do get one, either get it cheap privately or do what I did. I struck a deal when I bought the Hyosung with the dealer to trade in against a 500/600. Basically, bought the 125 for £3k and got a guarantee that I can trade in 2-3 months for £2.5k minimum. (providing I didnt dump it in a hedge!)

Hope this helps a little Mr. Green

speed isnt really an issue to me as im using it to commute to college which is 8 miles down the road from my house.

i did look into the Yamaha Yzf's but i much prefer a unfaired bike / naked bike. so the Gtr is out of the picture but im really keen on the GT as im not a skinny hobbit i need a big bike >.<

some people say it struggles up to 60 others say they where able to get 70 out of it easily.. is it depending on the rider or just luck from what comes out of the factory ? :o im 13 stone 6.1ft will i be able to reach at least 60 ? :L

I really like these bikes, i hoping to progress to a 250GT when i pass my mod 2, i saw a 125GTR today in the flesh for the first time and they are BIG!
really wide back tyre, big bike frame, it looked lilke a 400 or something really.

heaven knows what the speed is like on the 125GTR, but if it will do 70 then it must be more powerful than my YBR125 as mine looked pretty puny sat next to it, the YBR has got to be a fair bit lighter!
