Stumbled across this.....

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorized-bicycle-21-speed-mountain-bike-2-stroke-engine-/250915023491?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item3a6bb36a83

Somehow I doubt it's road legal!

No it's not road legal without a V5, Insurance, Tax and MOT. If it had an electric motor it would be fine.

As above; not at all. Have seen one being ridden around on pavements before, wasn't actually that loud.
Better bet is to go electric as SOME electric bikes are road legal; and very few people seem to know the law - of course they're silent too, which helps.

The bike in the link has just had a standard kit applied, which you can no doubt buy on ebay.

Hi

If it is a motorised vehicle then it will need to comply with all the rules for the type of vehicle it is. Hence that would probably need to be registered as a moped or motorcycle.

There is an exemption for electrically assisted bicycles / tricycles (ie, Sinclair C5). Must be able to be propelled by pedals and a top speed of 15mph.

All the best

Keith

And maximum power of 200W for normal solo bicycle I believe.

Hi

Don't think that would make it any more legal. However one of those things that people manage to get away with (like those who ride a mini moto on the road).

All the best

As a young lad, my Dad had a motorised bike which worked in a similar fashion to the Velosolex - a small engine was mounted over the front wheel, the engine powered a small rubber roller which was in contact with the front tyre and pushed it around.

There were a variety of these devices produced during the 50s and 60s, examples being the cyclaid and the cyclemaster (although both these types were a bit more 'advanced' than the basic model my Dad had.)

And a VIN and an MSVA pass, and you should wear a helmet to ride it.

On the other hand, Plod can't identify you, traffic won't pursue you (elf and safety, innit), and foot will be out of breath after fifty yards or so, so I'd imagine you're essentially safe from prosecution. Biggest danger will be a Plastic Plod throwing a paving slab at you to try and stop you.

I don't know the details, but for a mechanically propelled vehicle in UK law it has to be powered by one of the following things:

Petrol
Oil (diesel)
Gas
Electricity
Steam

And what makes it a motor vehicle in UK law is that it's made or adapted for use on a road.

Saying that, I've no idea whether that's legal or not, or what you'd have to do to make it road legal. If you want to get your mind really boggled with legislation look at the laws around mobility scooters!

If it is registered then it is a bike and perfectly legal. But needs tax, insurance and the rider needs a crash helmet.

All the best

You still see them come up on ebay some times. I think the ones that went on the front wheel had the plate go with this.
Think one or two people on here have had them at some point.
