Ok my nephews girlfriend has a small problem with her system. Basically her brother messed it up and they reverted to a system restore disk. Doh!

Anyway now all her files she had as her user name before are in-accessible. Her user name has been set back up but still no joy getting access to them, she is told she doesn't have access right to them even as the admin user.

Anyone know of any way to get access to them?

Cheers peeps

Gav

You might not have needed to do a full restore, you could have tried a system restore from within start--programs-accessories-system tools -- system restore
if you had then you could have gone forward again after this problem and backed up the data.

you could try this to give access to the folder:
Log on as the administrator (or with an account that you know has admin rights)

right click the folder and select 'Sharing and security....'

https://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/honeycutt/images/docshare01.jpg

tick the share this folder with other users on the network and allow them to change it. (rvrn if your not using a network, it will allow users of this PC to change it also)

log off and then back on with the user account and see if it helps.

Can you actually see the files.

I.e can you click on them before being told you don't have the write to view them.

If you can then see if you can copy them to another disk, proberbly wont work may do though.

Or stick the drive into another pc as a slave drive and try an access the files that way not sure if this will work may do, i think it depends upon how it was formatted originally.

Thats how i got files back after a install of of xp totally messed up on me.

I will ask a network technician at college tomorrow for you.

If they have been deleted then norton does a tool for recovering deleted files.

Best of luck.

i believe from what she was trying to explain they are the folders a user gets. As such she can't get any lower than seeing te folders.

I'll pass on the admin thing above. Thumbs Up

As you say really she shouldn't of had to of use the restore disk, but none computer people dont know how to generally drop into safe mode remove the offending program (which is all that would of been needed in this case) and end up doing more harm than good. Rolling Eyes

Can you log on as local admin, go into the security properties for the file and take ownership? Local admin has full control over everything on the machine so you should be able to take ownership and reset the security.
Unsure how this is done in XP but in 2k you go into security then advanced.

Hope it gets sorted!

so it sounds like a files where in the profile;
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%

in which case even if they created another user with the same name it won't have the same security identifier as the last i.e: it willl be a different account so unless the account has admin rights they won't be able to see the contents of the folder (by design-security)

If it's win xp Pro on a domain then the administrator will be able to take ownership as you described however when not connected to a domain (and in XP home) those options are not available, only the ones in the image before.

hope this helps.

Log in safe mode admin and browse to C:\documents & Settings\User\..... and you should then have access

A friend of mine had a similar problem,

because the files were admin in the first place normal access is almost impossible even with a duplicate username with admin privaliges,

he managed to get around the problem by getting a bloke at the computer shop to hack the registry which gave him his access rights back,

you may want to suggest that they keep their files in a normal profile, that way if there is another cockup the files can be retireved earlier Thumbs Up

Can you actually see the files? Are they definitely there? The reason why I ask is because usually when you use a 'restore disk' it just puts an image of the data back onto the hard drive. In other words it will wipe over everything on the hard drive and replace it with the factory default software. Hope this isn't the case though.

Another question, is the hard drive formatted as NTFS or FAT32? To find out you can go to 'My Computer' then right click the hard drive and click properties. It will show the file system there.

If it's FAT32 then getting the files back would be relatively easy. You could use a Win98 or DOS bootdisk to boot up the PC and then copy the files from the directories.

If it's NTFS then you can't use a bootdisk and I'm not too sure where to go from there...

Also, norton or other utilities will not be able to recover deleted files if a restore disk has been used.

Good luck! Thumbs Up

If it's NTFS you can use a Windows 98 boot disk Thumbs Up

It'll say starting Windows 98, but ignore it, say start with CD-ROM support, then it'll load basic drivers, once you get the DOS prompt away you go....copy the files, or whatever you want.

Now that's a little tip for you, and I won't charge you, this time Wink

Are you sure the Win98 boot disk will mount a NTFS partition? I don't think it will, I'm sure I've tried it before. Hmm, I'll have a look when I get home from work. Thinking

If Win98 disk won't then 2000 disk will Thumbs Up

I'm sure it will, fixed a few machines with XP (NTFS) and Win98 boot disk.

Remember also that XP can support both FAT32 and NTFS, which is why I'm sure I've used Win98 disk before.

Like I say, 2000 will defo work Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Doesn't the 2000 disk use the same type of interface as the XP disk? That stupid 'recovery console' crap that you have to put your username and password in to access the hard drive. If that's the case then the files would be just as accessible as they were in Windows (ie. not at all due to the access restrictions).

I'll have to check all this when I get home as I'm in work at the moment. Confused

You can read files on an NTFS partition by booting up from a startup disk but you can't copy or move them. You'll be needing a copy of NTFS DOS for that.
