HHHEEEEEELLLLLPPPP Razz

Got a bolt stuck in my bike. Well two, actually. Both have snapped as the bolt are old.

They head have snapped off and the bolts are flush to the surface, so I can't get any purchase with pliers or vice grips.

Any ideas of how to remove them?

Picture of one here:

drill it then use a screw extractor, no other way unfortunately unless its loose, if its loose then you should be able to work it out with a precision screwdriver and a hammer, but lets face it if it was loose it wouldnt have sheered

good luck Thumbs Up

I have had very similar issues recently and I solved the problem with screw extractors. You can buy a set from screw fix for a few quid.
You need to drill a small pilot hole into the centre of the bolt (doesn't need to be that deep).

Then you screw the extractors into them. They screw the opposite way to normal so that the are working to loosen the bolts as they screw in and "bite".

They give a really good purchase on the bolts and allowed me to get several bolts out of my carbs when everything else failed.

Thumbs Up

Edit: beaten to it

I'm betting that HD's next thread will be: Does Anyone Know How To Remove A Broken Screw Extractor?

BTW Why is this thread in general bike chat?

Haha, hope not!

And cos I thought about workshop, but then thought it would get a quicker response in here and other people may have stuck bolts and are more likely to see it. Method in the madness Wink

couple of tips for using screw extractors:

1. drill the hole as big and deep as you can without damaging the thread of the original hole, if its an old tough bolt then your gonni need as much leverage as possible, best not having a small shallow hole

2. be careful (as in super mega hyper careful) when using the screw extractor, once it bites screw it slowly and in small movements until the bolt is loose and turning freely. as raffles said you do not!!! want to snap the screw extractor in the screw, not good, half decent screw extractors are made of toughened steel, drill bits dont like drilling into them, it would be a nightmare!

Haha, imagine that. Screw extracting a screw extractor screw extracing a screw Laughing

And I take it you take the bolt all the way out? Or just undo the chuck and take the bolt out by hand as you have some length there now?

Could always try a left hand drill bit in the hope the screw comes out as you drill it.

If it is seized enough that the head snaps off it is almost certainly too seized for a screw extractor.

This, unless the person who snapped it has got caught-out by the inverted bolt and actually tightened it instead of loosening it.

When using screw extractors, you actually use the smallest you can get away with, not the largest. If you drill the hole too large it actually expands the stuck bolt and then it's even harder to extract.

This could well be the case but, a previous bolt I extracted was totally seized and would not come out.
The act of drilling the centre of the bolt out to give a pilot hole seemed to lossen it massively and it came out really easily.

I drilled the centre out with a really small bit and then used a bigger bit a couple of times until there was just a small wall of metal.

Just be very careful and get the first pilot hole as straight as possible.
As you widen the hole, keep pulling the drill out to check progress and that you not hitting the thread inside the hole.

Yeah, snapped both bolts when tightening.

One is in the top yoke (speedo mount) and the other is the bottom yoke (horn mount)

With the horn, ill just try the stud extractor and if it fucks up then ill mount it elsewhere.

With the speedo, ill try to extract it but worst come to worst ill leave it like it is atm. I have done the other mounts and just wedged a small spacer under it to stop wobbling.

Just drill down the middle of the bolt a few times, increasing drill bit size by .5mm each time until the bolt will crumble out.

A couple of times I've fired up a Mig welder and welded a blob on the end of the snapped bolt, this gives you something to use mole grips on and the heat usually loosens it too! Its been more successul than my previous attempts at drilling and extracting which usually turn into a mess!

Obviously this method isn't suitable for all locations and materials! Smile

Good luck!
