So the plan is to run the Aerox race 'ped without a battery, lights, starter motor etc etc. Literally the bare minimum.

As far as I can see, I can get away with using just the CDI, coil and a kill switch.

I've attached the original diagram, and my stripped down version. I'd really appreciate any input whether that'll work or not. I'm making a semi-educated (at best) guess.

EDIT: 20 is the 'CDI magneto' which I guess is the wires from the stator plate/generator. The two wires I've left unconnected just go the reg/rec, since I don't need power, I don't need those to do anything.
19 is the CDI
6 is the coil
7 is the spark plug.

Want to post the full diagram as well, I'm guessing there should be some form of points/pickup there.

I have done, it's the second link.

I think the points/pickup is the '19'. There's a pickup on the outside of the generator, and I assume the WR (white/red) and BR (brown/red) carry the signal from the pickup to the CDI.

My only real concern is does the CDI need power to work.

If that's how it's wired (and it does seem to be) then it's using the same pulse that comes from the stator to both power and time the ignition. It's certainly possible to do that but is usually only done on ancient/tiny engines.

Give it a shot, it should work!

I have run it with no battery connected, so I think it should work. I've seen it done almost exactly the same on a Gilera DNA moped of a similar era.

I'll just suck it and see I guess!

Here are the images that encouraged me to do it:

and

No idea what the two flying cables are, clearly one's earth, dunno what the other is. I guess it's the wire that gets grounded to kill the spark.

But that looks like the same way I've done it, do you think?

Thinking out loud...

Since I don't have a battery, there's actually no need to use the frame as an earth at all is there... Since there are no other components.

So I don't actually need to connect the coil to the frame, but the spurs where the bolts would go through, will effectively become 'earth'. So it can just be a small standalone circuit and to 'earth' the kill switch wire, I can just connect it to the spars of the coil?

That sounds correct? I'm just waiting on my new crimp connectors to arrive and I can hook it up. I seem to have cut off the bracket wherever the coil used to bolt on, so I'll have to relocate it anyway.

It would be better if you still used the frame as an earth.
The spark in the plug is caused by the high voltage 'jumping' to earth (i.e. the engine block)

Just for any future readers (and with BCF's popularity I suspect this ranks quite high on Google) the above wiring diagram works fine.
