As some people have said try watching other riders in traffic. I would also point out that it is dangerous to follow someone else blindly. Ride for yourself and all that.
If your following someone else that is more experienced I imagine that most beginers (inc myself) would not feel confident riding at the same speed/pace as them.
In other words be careful when following someone else.

I find that I ride my worst when I have a biker behind me. I don't mind slowing down a car, but I always feel as if I am impeding the progress of other bikers because I am trying to overtake and filter safely, but every other biker I meet is trying to fly down the traffic. This makes me speed up and take more risks. I try to resist it but it's difficult.

Pull in to the left and let the other bikers go passed, thats what I do, no point in holding them up. I have no need to rush from A to B, I'd rather get to my destination in one piece and not to another destination via an ambulance !

If someone comes up behind me, I just duck into traffic and let them past if they're faster than I am. Half the time, it's a courier. The only pain is that's yet another thing to pay attention to when you're filtering. Rolling Eyes

I do try and let them past, but as you say it's another lifesaver in heavy traffic to pull in, then another looking out for suicidal scooter boys and couriers.

I was knocked off yesterday whilst filtering past a queue of stationary traffic. The queue opened up across a junction just as I was about to go past and the silly driver just looked left and pulled straight out into and over me and the bike. One poor wrecked ER5 luckily no damage bar bruising for me.
I was dubious to the legality of it but the police were called and they said it was fine. Its always the responsibility of the driver at a give way to look BOTH ways before pulling out.

After this tho I will not be filtering past junctions. Always safer to pull in and wait for the sake of a few seconds!!
Keep the speed down too. I was only doing 5mph and had almost stopped by the time I was hit and the impact still wrote off my bike. Imagine what happens at 10 times that speed (50mph)

Pretty common accident I imagine. Very important to look for gaps when you're filtering. Glad you're okay though.

Similarily, yesterday a woman (mid-40s) jogged out in front of me from behind a white van - luckily I was doing around 5mph and stopped. She then looked me in the eye apologising, whilst jogging into the oncoming traffic, who also had to react quickly to avoid knocking her down.

I thought Darwins theory of evolution meant people like that didn't get to breeding age? Rolling Eyes
