I have just acquired a 1995 Kawasaki GTR1000 Combo and was wondering what's the best thing to do before trying to fire-up an engine that's been stood for 15 months.? Very Happy

Check it has oil and water, charge the battery and give it a go.

I'd worry about spending money on fluid or plug changes after it's proved it will run, not before.

1) Check it has petrol
2) Check it has oil
3) Check the battery is charged
4) Fire it up! Then you can ACTUALLY know if anything is wrong rather then just trying to pre-emptively guess.

drain the float bowls and put some fresh fuel in the tank. Check the electrolyte levels in the battery and charge the battery. Change the oil. Check and top up the coolant.

Just charge the battery, check the oil and start it.

Thanks Guys, it's a consensus of opinion then to just fire it up after petrol and oil checks. I was worrying about frozen rings and gungy dried up petrol in the carbs. Will let you know as soon as I try it....pics to follow soon. Very Happy

When I bought my Thundercat it had stood for 12 months. Put the key in and it nearly started, but the battery was too flat, so a quick charge and it started and ran first time. I never did anything about the fuel, except use what was in there and fill it up again. It got new oil and brake fluid at the next service. Had it 9 years now and it still runs sweet as a nut.

could pull the plugs and put a dribble of light oil down the holes if worried about stuck rings.

If suspect seized, turn the engine over by the crank (usually somewhere to do this under one of the side covers) carefully to make sure it'll do at least a full revolution.

Turn engine over on kill switch until oil light goes out (likely need more than this if its been stood anyway)

as soon as it runs and sounds like its making all the right noises, stop and replace the oil. doesn't need to be expensive oil but new. Old oil does not store well in an engine that has run, best to get it out asap but no point in doing even that if there is a hole in the piston.
