I keep seeing bikes on Ebay that have no documentation, the explanation usually being "documents lost". Are these people just lying through their teeth or do people really lose V5's?

Is there anything else I should be looking out for? I've seen a few ads where the seller is missing the keys or a key has broken off in a lock.

Then there are all the bikes that look good in the photos but when I read the description and investigate a little further I am left feeling suspicious that all is not as it should be.

This is a typical example; this 125cc Gilera RC caught my eye because it is currently at only £185 (1 day left on bidding) but then I'm thinking "why hasn't it got a new MOT?" Something must be wrong with it, and the seller has 3 negative feedback comments that make me think he's untrustworthy.

No MOT but would pass = Bike is a heap.
Documents lost, no V5 bruv = Bike is stolen.

Those two rules should see you well. Thumbs Up

You'll probably see a fair few that say V5 been applied for but not recieved yet but they have the green new keepers bit. I never give these a 2nd look unless an absolute bargain.

To me it says at best a dealer trying to make a quick buck. At worst it's a private seller who bought it a week ago, found out its a total shed and wants to offload it asap.

+1
If it will pass MOT easy it would have one already and be sold at full price, I always steer clear of cars/bikes with no V5 or MOT, Just not worth the risk.

sometimes they can be worth a pop tho if they at least have the green slip and mot cert or some other paperwork, and its not unheard of for dvla to lose the odd v5 either lol..
