I got my cub in December/January last year, insured it with Swintons for the grand sum of 130 pounds for the year TPFT, paid in full on the day.

Flash forward 10 months later i sold the cub to a BCF'er did not tell insurers as there was only month or two left to run. Just had a cancellation charge in the post from them for 56 pounds.

Phoned up, was told that as the new owner else has insured it, my policy was cancelled. And that a vehicle cannot be insured by two people at the same time, is this correct?

I was just going to let it run out on its own in December and that would have been that.

To charge half the total yearly premium in cancellation charges for a month left on a policy i did not request to be cancelled seems unfair..?

Do i have any options here other than payment, indeed if i refuse to pay what are the next steps, would they send demand letters then eventually sell the debt on to a third party who would send more demand letters (which i could ignore) or would insurers go down the CCJ route for this.

Im amazed i don't even own a motorbike anymore and the insurance companies are still fucking me.

Cheers

I had the same from Hastings. Told them I'd sold the bike, they said cough up £55.
I said I'd rather not, what happens if I don't.
They said you can't have two insurances on the same vehicle.
I said I don't want to do that, what happens if I do nothing.
They said you can't have two insurances on the same vehicle.
I said but what happens if I do nothing.
They said, you can't have two insurances on the same vehicle.
This went round a few more times until I lost the will to live and eendedup paying.

I believe you insist on your insurance standing, then the new owner can't insure it, but any accidents he has you might find any other third parties claiming on your insurance. It's a now win situation Evil or Very Mad

I had the same bike with 2 policies... just 2 different names, insurer was fine with that.
Police didn't seem too convinced though... But still, the insurer was fine with it.

I have actually got away with letting the policy lapse on 2 different bikes that I'd sold - one had 6 months left but cancelling would've cost me more (after a cashback offer it cost me just £8.50 to insure an Er-5 for a year fully comp Shocked ). I stayed quiet & nothing happened - the other bike was sold a couple of months ago & the insurance ran out a few weeks back - again I just stayed quiet & heard nothing.

I'm guessing you were just unlucky?

Of course they can as far as we know, we've done it a few times on both car and bike and never had any issues at all, for example, my Virago is insured by me on my policy and by my sister's husband on his policy, totally seperate and never heard a peep about it.

Usually they ask whether or not you are the registered keeper of the vehicle and I often find if you are not the registered keeper and try to insure something, the cost of the insurance goes up.

Maybe you are down as the registered keeper on your insurance and since you are no longer the registered keeper the insurance policy is technically invalidated? If so, I'd ask to change that unless the years NCB isn't worth it to you.

Tell them to shove it and that you are letting the policy expire as usual for an extra years no claims, if they still think it's against the law get them to send you the relevant legislation in writing.

Not true as I understand it. Ask them to direct you to the relevant legislation, or clause in their Terms and Conditions.

A couple of years back, a friend of mine was getting back into biking but didn't have a bike. I had two. So he took out an ebike monthly policy on exactly the same bike that I already had on my multi-bike policy. He stated that he wasnt the owner or registered keeper. Neither insurance company tried to cancel the other's policy.

The police even stopped me on said bike at one point and (when checking my details) noted that there were two policies on the vehicle. They were perfectly fine with it.

Where you might fall down is if you've confirmed that you're the owner and registered keeper of the vehicle when you took out the policy. Selling/transferring the V5 will therefore invalidate your policy. They happened to find out because someone else also took out insurance and maybe they checked the registered keeper with the DVLA. It may be possible for two policies to run together, but you can't both register the bike at the same time.

Even so, I'd question the validity of applying a customer cancellation charge when you have requested no such thing. Again, refer to T&C.

Edit: They're very unlikely to pursue it as a CCJ as it will cost them £30 to file the claim, plus their time.

Utter tosh. It's not convenient for them, it likely plays merry havoc with the MID, but "cannot"? Complete jive. Tell them to whistle for their money, you'll see them in County Court, and be having your costs as well.
