So, I'm going there with work next week, really looking forward to it. Problem is it's looking fairly busy work wise, so may not have a huge amount of time to explore, can anyone reccomend the good places to go in the evening, and the best places to explore if I get a chance during a day sometime? I've never been to Asia, so all advice and experiences are most welcome!

Ive never been, but the advice I was given if I ever go was to take a LOT of pot noodles with you because you wont want to eat any of the food there.

I think that obviously depends.

My mum has been with work for 2 weeks and said although the food was exotic it was very good, the only thing she didn't like was cubes of fat. They would eat just lumps of lamb fat in a stew.

Shanghai is also where the spicy food is compared to the other big cities. So if you like spicy exotic food you will probably be fine. If you are a pussy and just have chicken fried rice when you go for a Chinese then you may fail.

TBH avoid the expat and touristy bars there. Unless you are looking for a WG. And if you're staying in a hotel put down a woman's name on the register. Then yank the phone out the wall socket. It prevents all night calls of you wanne massage?

Food wise.... I'm not sure, not keen on Chinese over here but imagine its totally different over there.

I'm really fussy though... not keen on meat, but will eat any vegetable you throw at me, and would happily eat bugs etc.

Im sure I'll surivive! I hope!

Work are putting us up in a fairly fancy hotel so don't expect those sorts of phone calls... and if i do...I'm on expenses anyway, so as long as they give reciepts Laughing Cool

Just a day ?

Go to the 7 winding bridge / teahouse. THrow some crap for the koi carp to eat, don't drink the tea.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuyuan_Garden
There is a Starbucks nearby, but avoid any drink with jelly balls in it. There however is a restaraunt selling steamed pork dumplings nearby (look like pasta served with ginger/vinegar) which is awesome (and cheap). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiaolongbao)
There are alot of tourist shops around it. Buy nowt. My dad managed to sell a watch to a Chinese man there though.

TV tower - nice for a cup of coffee a few hundred meters in the sky, and there is a very good museum under it.
https://www.nileguide.com/destination/shanghai/things-to-do/oriental-pearl-tv-tower/417006. There is a starbucks nearby.

Peoples park. Nice for a walk, and it has a Starbucks.

#outside of Shanghai is a historical recreation of an old village, but its a bit of a drive, and takes all day.

Huo Guo. This was awesome. Indoor 'barbecue'. You order a type of soup (mainly chilli) order your raw meats and a grade of chilli dip. You then cook at your table (by dipping in the central cauldron of boiling soup) and eat your meat after dipping in your chilli. Sounds like a health and safety nightmare, but the FREE BEER made it my firm favorite. My dad liked this too.

There are loads of McDonalds and Pizza hut in Shanghai, as well as american type steakhouses - my parents are very picky eaters, and they ate out every day while we were there. Nanjing Road was very good for this type of place, as its full of westerners/wealthy-ish Chinese people.

I liked Shanghai a lot.

Yeah, that'll work. Wink

I got those phone calls in every hotel I stayed in. Woman calls, Speaks in chinese, I say 'eh?' and hang up. Two mins later and my wife answers the door to a prostitute which I accidentally ordered.

Shanghai - super place. Lots of err- entertainment. Ignore the fuddy duddies and go for some LIFE in the more interesting tourist bits. The clubs & bars can be fun even for an old git like me. They tend to group in certain areas. Do not worry about language problems - I never failed to manage in shops/ bars etc, especially the etc. I spent a lot of time around Julu Road (bars/ clubs) and in Zapatas Mexcican club

Where you staying (PM me) ?

Taxis are real cheap and fairly reliable. My way to get around was to find an international type hotel near where I wanted to go (for the entertainment) and then get my hotel taxi-man to get me a taxi to the other hotel. Reverse the process to get back BUT BUT always make sure you carry a card with the name / address/ phone number of your hotel in clearly legible form. Most hotels have these at reception or just ask them to write one for you. In my experience the reception staffs at any hotel you are likely to stay at will speak impecable English. If every you get lost (I did at times) just find a big hotel and the reception folk will sort you out with a taxi.

I work for an events company, has it's up and downs...the big ups being things like this, the down being theres a possiblity I could be working 23 hours a day while over there... fingers crossed nothing goes wrong.

That's good advice with the hotel and taxi cards, I'll definately keep that in mind. I'll be with 2 other guys who are both up for a laugh, we did the red light district and strip clubs in Hamburg the other week, so don't mind if we end up somewhere a bit 'grubbier' but also don't mind the real fancy places as mentioned, we'll be on expenses.

What's food like for someone fussy with meat? Vegetables noodles and vegetable curry exist out there right?

I'll PM my hotel when i know it!

Food - just eat it. Actually you can get any type of food you want including most western styles.

The entertainment places will not be 'grubbier' unless you try the Barber Shop type (pink/ red light in windows) but those are better avoided on a short trip. If you are located in Pudong area then Sacrosa would be an eye opener for you. I could live in places like that.

https://www.shanghai-nightlife-guide.com/shanghai-sauna/sacrosa/

My hotel was usually on Hengshan Lu which is close to Zapatas/ Julu Rd/ Jingan Temple which is at the Eastern end of the main upper class shopping roiad of Nanjing Road - Pudong area is at the other (Bund) end of that road (miles) and across the main river. I knew my area like the back of my hand and used to walk a lot. Generally VERY safe walking about even in the early hours of the morning

This is very good. I had a laminated set of tags with the addresses I needed to get to. The Bund is pretty good - very westernised area popular with the 'big noses'.

You'll be fine. Chinese food is fantastic and a lot of it is vegetarian. Whoever suggested pot noodles must be the find of person who thinks that having three veg with their meat is a bit risque. I spent 3 weeks in India and by the time I was done I was sick of Indian food and cut down on how much I eat at home, after 9 days in China I couldn't get enough of the stuff and eat much more of it at home now! Chinese that you get in the UK is much closer to 'real' Chinese than you get with Indian food too.

I was only in Shanghai for a couple of days so didn't have too much time to wander around, but what little we did was really enjoyable.

Yes, you will get looked at but not in an intimidating/threatening way (unlike in Marrakesh where you can tell that they're mugging you with their eyes). If the smog isn't too bad a trip up the Oriental Pearl tower is worthwhile.

In the last 2 year I've been out 6 times to China but never made it quite as far as Shanghai (usually Taiwan, Shenzhen, HK and Guangzhou).

The food can be quite daunting but ususally fantastic like McJamweasel has already said. Don't be afraid to try anything, despite what it might look like! You might want to get yourself started on some boiled chicken feet or a Century egg to get you warmed up Wink If you're being taken to lunch by locals, expect to spend a few hours mulling over dimsum. In fact, get used to dim sum. Lots of dim sum.

You're usually quite safe in the cities in terms of decent restaurants which can range from modern asian fusion to trendy western 'boutique' to smacked off your tits insane restaurants that serve your food in a potty.

As for the Chinese I find them, on the whole to be very polite, especially so if you use a little bit of the language for greetings, thank you and basic questions. A bit effort in that respect goes a long way.

Thanks for all the useful comments, advice and pictures. The hotel was booked today... the Grand Hyatt... looks rather...spectacular! So, I'm near the Bund area.

Also, I became single this weekend unfortunately, but will be using my time in Shanghai to try and forget about it as much as possible....so

What are the Chinese girls like? I'd rather not pay if possible! How do they view western guys, and how many will speak any English?

Also, I managed to eat a whole Chinese in a restaurant yesterday using only chopsticks....I was reasonably proud of myself.

Some of the best food I have ever had was in China.
We found Yoshinoya in Shanghai - oriental fast food, and that was really nice. Must have been full of sugar, salt and e-numbers.

Watch out for all the people trying to entice you off from the main shopping areas to buy goods they show you on little colour cards. Just wave them off politely and its fine.

The museum is fantastic, we spent a couple of hours there.

The Pearl Tower or Observatory 88 in the Jin Mao Tower (entry was 88 Yuan and its surprisingly...floor 88 Very Happy )would be a good call.

The bund was closed when we were there because of all the ground work in preperation for the 2010 Expo. I think we really missed out.

Check out the skyscrapers in the evening - they are all lit up.

Not pay? You will be lucky. They are not there just to decorate the place. However, prices are reasonable and the quality + experience can be high. I still suggest Sacrosa during a short visit.

I'm here right now an loving the place! I'm staying in the Jin Mao tower so no need to go to the observatory on top as my rooms on floor 77!

View from my room....

Food so far has been pretty good, on a trip a little further outside the main area we did have a 'guess what you are eating' which was a little worrying but fine!

Major works now done so time to get a bit more partying and exploration done, anyone got any reccomendations for bars/clubs or areas packed with them?

I'll get more pictures up when I'm back!

I'm of no use at all I'm afraid, despite having been there 5 or 6 times this year, staying at the JW marriott in tomorrow square. Just get out there and enjoy, ex pat forums are the best for finding the best clubs to go to that aren't crawling with hookers.
